Every woman should read this! VERY inspirational...I'd rather be a whale

Cydney J (Cydney M), on October 6, 2011 at 4:25 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 150

On my FB page I posted the following story and picture...the response I got from a guy was this: "There is no excuse for obesity" It really angered me! There are so many women out there who struggle with how they look and fit in with society...and it's people like this guy who make the struggle more difficult! Needless to say, he was removed as a 'friend' on my FB.

Here's the story:

A while back, at the entrance of a gym, there was a picture of a very thin and beautiful woman. The caption was "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?"

The story goes, a woman (of clothing size unknown) answered the following way:

"Dear people, whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, seals, curious humans), they are sexually active and raise their children with great tenderness.

They entertain like crazy with dolphins and eat lots of prawns. They swim all day and travel to fantastic places like Patagonia, the Barents Sea or the coral reefs of Polynesia.

They sing incredibly well and sometimes even are on cds. They are impressive and dearly loved animals, which everyone defend and admires.

    Mermaids do not exist.

But if they existed, they would line up to see a psychologist because of a problem of split personality: woman or fish?

They would have no sex life and could not bear children.

Yes, they would be lovely, but lonely and sad.

And, who wants a girl that smells like fish by his side?

Without a doubt, I'd rather be a whale.

At a time when the media tells us that only thin is beautiful, I prefer to eat ice cream with my kids, to have dinner with my husband, to eat and drink and have fun with my friends.

We women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn't enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies.

We are not fat, we are greatly cultivated.

Every time I see my curves in the mirror, I tell myself: "How amazing am I ?!"

(The girl on the picture is French model Tara Lynn)

I think it is sad that a gym would find that a OK marketing campaign. I think everyone should be encouraged to be the healthiest they can be, and the body shape will be what it is supposed to be.

If I were you, I would "unfriend" that person...my facebook "friends" know I don't allow stupidity on my "wall".

    @Jamie...I know right?!

@MrsHaire ... it really is a shame there are guys out there like this. Makes me sad. Women have to stick together and be positive with one another!

@Future KH ... I agree, not a good campaign to have at a gym! Also, I did unfriend him...I posted on his wall first stating that I would be removing his comment and him as a friend.

A few of my friends posted this link on Facebook too! I thought, "what a bizarre campaign...mermaid or whale? Random." The model seen here is a size 12 and is a babe! It's refreshing that not all men think the way this dude does. My FH all the time says, "Ew, that girl is SKINNY. OMG, gross! I can see her ribs from behind!" I've lost 2 dress sizes in the past year yet my fiance has never once said, "aw, your so hot now!" When I say, "I need to get new jeans," he asks why and I look at him with disbelief and go, "because they're too big." To which he answers, "Ah...cool!" Looking back at old pictures I notice a stark contrast, but the fact he's never thrown anything regarding my weight (either gaining or losing) out there reassures me guys like this "friend" are declining into the minority!

Call me whatever you want, there is very few legitimate excuses for obesity (sure there are some people who have actual issues but that's a VERY small percentage). There is nothing wrong with being a little heavy, as long as you are healthy, but most "whales" are far from healthy. Personally, I'd rather be skin and bones than fat, and if you think dudes don't struggle with their weight just as much as girls do you are nuts.

Glenn...nobody said dudes don't struggle with their weight...but women struggle with a lot more when it comes to looks and fitting into to society's "norm" ... A LOT more than men do.

Just because women talk about it more openly doesn't mean they struggle with it "A LOT" more, trust me, guys talk about these things together and many are willing to discuss it when it's other guys but for the most part we don't like people thinking we are weak (which is what we associate with complaining about something we can control). Do we get more leeway into the obesity scale? Yes, but that doesn't mean we are all right with it.

And telling women it's ok to be obese is just dangerous and completely and utterly irresponsible.

Regardless Glenn, it's NOBODY'S business what people do with their own bodies. it's THEIR life, THEIR body, people need to butt the fu** out. I've struggled my ENTIRRRREEEE life and it's a struggle for me to stay at a healthy weight and exercise. For some people is just comes more naturally and much easier.

I'm with glenn on this one, some people just don't have an excuse for being obese(not just chubby or curvy but down right can't get out of bed anymore obese)

on another note, there are some who have medical conditions, as I've seen try to do something about it to get help. Being someone with a Thyroid condition and have major problems with my weight I know how it feels being told that I'm not as beautiful as the twig standing next to me, weight should not be the main factor in saying whether a person is beautiful or not...

Clearly people who are bed ridden and getting McDonalds delivered have no excuse for their weight issues

It's very difficult to look at a stranger and be able to determine their medical history. Also some of us are so quick to judge that I don't think it would matter. Guys do get away with being fat whereas women are made fun of if they are a size 12. Amazing.

P s. Mcdonalds delivers? Who knew. Lol

Funny story about this... I was at our home town bar about a year ago and some guy kept calling me a fatty.... I weigh 139lbs I am alot of things but I am not a fatty.... I shook it off for about an hour and it continued so finally i walked up to him after he said it again and cold clocked him several times and broke his nose.... needless to say he never mentioned it again and has not been back since... moral of the story... men can be very cruel to women regardless of their weight
