Everyday Scam to be aware of, please read.

There is a scam going on that everyone needs to be aware of. It can happen to ANYONE who does not know how to spot it.

It can start anywhere from Craigslist, to roomates.com (happened to me there!) to the newspaper.

You are selling something, anything. A person contacts you via

e-mail and says they will take the item. THEN they say "We will send you a check for $500 over the amount. Use that money to ship it, and keep the rest as a thank you".

~~~This scam is happeneing all over the internet. I was on roomates.com. A girl said she was coming in from South Africa and needed a room. She sent me a check for $5000, told me to use some as a deposit, and send the rest to her agent so she could buy her ticket to the US.
So if you have online sles (wedding dresses, veils, etc) and you are asked to cash a check and keep the rest dont!!
The checks are fake! Its a hugs problem and people are being taken for THOUSANDS!! It also involves people who are :outside the country". Be aware!!
    It happened to us as well, a couple of years ago. Client contacted us from England, and was having the wedding in our town. Wanted me to arrange the venue, flowers, ceremony etc. He'd send the money for my expenses and the rest is history. We didn't fall for it...
    This is coming from someone who works at a bank. If anyone ever contacts you via email saying they want to send you a check and wants you to cash it, its most likely fraud. Also, be aware of ppl contacting you saying their with some organization and are for non-profit. Unfortunately this will never cease, just gotta be smart & cautious!
    I had someone on craigslist rent my house for me (that I had just rented out) - at half the cost! I called the FBI & they referred me to the online internet crime site for the FBI. Because the people are not in the US, they said there's not much to be done about it, but be savvy & wise.
    I get this a lot when I post on craigslist. I have a wedding dress for sale and I’ve gotten responses from people asking me to consider the dress sold, that they will be purchasing it with money order, sending a check or even depositing money into my bank account. They ask for my name, address and phone number I responded once saying that the item was still available. Their return email was that they would have someone pick up once I had the payment, sounded convincing but I decided I would let it ride sure enough since then I’ve gotten at least 4 emails same situation different persons. Not sure how much further they would have gotten if I believed them.
    I get alot of those on craigslist too. If it sounds fishy I tell them that I only sell to local people and if they are interested in it otherwise I would be more than happy to put it on ebay and send them a link so that they can buy and pay for it via pay pal. Safe and secure.
    Happened to me a while back. I was selling a guitar for 100 dollars, and they sent me a business check for 10,000. When I called to see what was up, the guy said something like "O, i'm sorry my secretary must have made a mistake. Take your $100, take the shipping money, and just send the rest back with the guitar." I ended up calling the company the check was made out from, and they said it was a scam that they were investigating.
    What happens is the bank will cash the check, and when they find out it's bogus, YOU are responsible for the money, not the person that wrote the check!
    Oh ya that is going around every where and its so sad to hear it. I am a police officer during my full time job, and it really pisses me off to hear this. Then it happens to elderly people all the time. Gez I wish I can tell you some of the stories I report on.
