Extra Photography charges

Caitlin, on October 7, 2019 at 4:00 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

So I booked a photographer for the wedding, which came with an engagement session. The package we picked came with all wedding images, an album, and we paid for a second photographer. I had also won an engagement session from a raffle they had. Did the session all went well, got an email to schedule a preview of the session and get photos, along with a package list. That's where issues came.

1. They have these ridiculous charges just to get the photos. The lowest package is 800(discounted), and that is only for prints no digital. To get the digital images, it's 1200.

2. They sent the email with package list. Then sent an email later or the next day, with a similar but different package list than the first not even acknowledging the first email it was saying oh come schedule here's our prices, but the prices were different, the lowest package was gone, the next was 1499(discounted). That also didnt include digital files. It would be an extra 400 for that.

I feel so money grabbed and they are tacking on these costs that I did not know about when deciding on them for my photographer. I already signed a contract(that I as of now don't have a copy of because they never emailed it to me like said would), and put down a 500 deposit. Am I crazy and this is normal and okay prices. I feel like thats insane money. (mind the package we paid for wedding was 3800 for the package, second shooter, and wedding album).

Advice. Please.

I’m a little confused. You signed the contract for the wedding and that included an engagement shoot, but did it include images from the engagement shoot? Did you do the shoot from your contract or from the giveaway you won? I’m asking because I’ve seen photographers “give away” sessions but charge a ridiculous amount of money for prints, but I’ve never heard of that when the engagement session is included in the wedding contract.

Unless stated in your contract or with the package list, prints will almost always be an extra cost. When you say your package includes all wedding photos, I assume those are digital copies. So, all of those (hundreds or thousands) images, a second shooter, and an album (assuming with a certain number of prints for $3800 is actually not that bad of a price.

So I used the free engagement session I won in the raffle because they said the one that’s with the wedding package can be used later and doesn’t expire(maternity or newborn or family session etc they said I could use it for). They did not say and I don’t have the contract I’ve emailed asking for after this happened realizing they never sent it.

If you've already signed the contract, there's not much you can do sadly. I would for sure ask for the contract again, and if they don't email it then tell them you don't want to move forward until you have your copy of it. Did you sign it in person or something? I do think the prices are a little high, but I also paid $1675 for two shooters and all the digitals.

Will they give you digital copies? Perhaps you can print them yourself?

I think you need to demand the contract and see if you get print release rights. While our package will include prints, we made sure any photographer we considered would be giving us print release rights so that we could print on our own. Check on that because if you have them, you do not need to order any prints from them.
