Extra Postage for Bow "bump"

Jennifer, on January 5, 2022 at 12:53 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

I've finished stuffing and putting a single "Forever" stamp on my Save the Dates. After some Googling on how to mail these in at the post office (for hand-cancelling), I just read that the extra "bump" from the bow in my Save the Date is going to cost an extra 20 cents (non-machinable surcharge). This surcharge was of 4/2021. I would hate to waste extra Forever Stamps so should I just head to the Post Office with one of the invitations to purchase extra regular stamps to make up for the bump or will they just let me pay for them using my card without affixing additional stamps on each envelope? I wish I had known about this non-machinable surcharge or I would have never added the bow.

This same thing happened with my daughter's invitations. which also had a bow. They would not let her pay for extra cost on her card alone. She had to affix extra stamps which took away from buying the "love/wedding" stamps she was using. In the end, no one else cares, but she worked hard on presentation and the extra cost was also unexpected.

Ugh, I did the same thing, too... and now I have to add a bunny and a pear stamp to cover the now 30 cent surcharge (up 10 cents from last year). I think I'm just annoyed that I have to go through every single envelope and stick 2 additional stamps on them. They don't have 30 cent stamps, just 20 cent ones (bunny).

It depends on the size of your bow, I just mailed mine which had a satin ribbon bow and definitely had some kind of a bump but had no issues at all when I mailed them. I took a few to the post office to have them weighed and checked and I asked what stamp it needed and the lady just said 1 forever stamp. People have received them and I didn't have any issues

Yes, most of them weigh in as a forever stamp. The problem is that because of the "bump" many will rip as they go through the machine, so many brides prefer that they are personally handled by a person (hand-cancelled) so they do not go through a machine. This entails a separate stamp so it is personally inspected.

Oh interesting! I’m going to try taking mine to the post office and see if it goes through their machine. It is a flat bow. Plus, It’s just the save the dates and don’t care for it that much. Except I already ordered the 20c and 10c stamps. But it will save me from having to stick them on there though!

I'm aware, just sharing my own experience! I had my Save the dates hand cancelled when we sent those due to a wax seal on the envelope.

For the bows, we had no problems and the invites arrived in perfect condition with just the forever stamp. Just sharing my own experience to let OP know

No harm in asking! Or sending 3 or 4 to friends and seeing if there are any issues as a trial if you really want to

Is there a way to just put them in new envelopes with the correct stamp on them? Having multiple stamps on the envelope will look a little... tacky Smiley atonished .

If I really care that much about it to waste money, but I don’t. They’re just save the dates. No one is going to care. If they do and complain about it, then maybe they shouldn’t be invited lol

Hey! I’ll be going to the post office to have them checked. Do you remember what you asked them to do to check if they go through? I think I might as well bring my rehearsal dinner and wedding invitations too to check if they’re going to have issues, as well.

Yeah! I just said I was mailing a bunch of wedding invites and wanted to make sure I got the right postage and that everything was good to go with them before bringing all 150 of them. Luckily the person helping me was super nice and there wasn't a line when I went.
