Extra postage for double thick cardstock?

Sarah Anne, on February 20, 2019 at 5:01 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 6

Hello everyone! I posted not too long ago about using Catprint to print my DIY wedding invitations. I originally ordered my invitations using their "Ultra Cardstock" (130 lb), but when I got my free hard copy proof the paper felt a bit flimsy and unglamorous. My fiancee wants to upgrade to their double thick cardstock (200 lb), but I fear that this will make our invitation too rigid and "non-machinable" at the post office, which will in turn increase our postage costs. I had intentionally scaled back on our invitations to save money (it's just one double-sided 5x7 card and we're asking guests to RSVP on our wedding website), so I really don't want to have to pay back the difference in postage. Has anyone else here used a double thick cardstock for their invitations? Did you end up having to pay more for postage because of the thickness of the card?

We used extra thick paper from minted and our invitations were 1.5 ounces, therefore we needed a 2 ounce stamp, which is 70cents versus 55cents for the one ounce stamp. For 125 invitations that was an increase of $18.75

We could still use the 55cent stamps for the RSVP, though. I would think you could still do the same.

    Hope that helps!

Thank you, that does help! Guess we'll have to go back to the regular cardstock, then. I really don't want to have to pay extra for postage, no matter how nice the double thick cardstock is!

We had to pay for 70 cent postage instead of 55 cent, because we had ribbon on our invitations that made them not flat. We bought 100 stamps and the cost difference between the 70 cent and 55 cent was $15 lol. It was a pretty insignificant increase, so I say get the thicker cardstock if you want!

Do you have the extra thick as a sample? If so, you can take it to the post office and ask them about it! Or you can weigh it on a (food) scale yourself.

I agree with FutureStephD to take the sample to the post office. I brought my assembled invite in to check the weight and they told me it feels just flexible enough for a $0.70 stamp but if it’s stiff it’s considered a parcel so it would have been even more. So the stiffness also matters not just the weight. My invite is a different story than yours though as I have the invite a reception card and the RSVP so that all assembled made it less bendy.

Unfortunately I don’t, my sample is the regular card stock.
