fabric dye experience and/or design master floral spray paint

NLeo, on March 3, 2014 at 8:20 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 3

I can't find a good deal on the silk flowers for centerpieces. However, I found a great deal on them in white. I'm thinking of just dying them myself to save money. I'd love to hear any experience you've had with fabric dye...brands, techniques, tips, etc. I'm looking for a two tone effect so I wondered if I could just make the dye stronger and paint them kind of like watercolor paint. Any other ideas?

I'm wanting to submerge them in water so I assume fabric dye should be waterproof since it's for clothes. ...And obviously I'm going to do a test one first Smiley winking

I've heard of the design master spray paint but I don't think it will work for the two tone look I want. But I'd love to hear any good or bad feedback. Is it waterproof?

Some silk flowers have a latex or vinyl coating; can I use COLORTOOL Sprays on them?

COLORTOOL Sprays are not suitable on vinyl or latex coated items. If sprayed directly onto vinyl or latex the paint will not dry due to an incompatibility between the spray and the surface. However, prior to application, a coating of Design Master SUPER SURFACE SEALER will act as a barrier between the two finishes and allow it to dry.

As for the two tone color you can achieve that with the spray you just keep it further away or closer. You will probably have to practice a bit if you aren't use to using spray paints etc. It's really simple if you go with distance etc.

Thanks Michele. Do I have to spray the flower from both sides or will the color bleed through? Here is the color im trying to match, teal that fades to purple. Maybe ill get some dye and some spray abd see what looks better.

I'd go the easier way -- white flowers in colored water!
