Fabric for chuppah

sarah, on October 15, 2017 at 2:31 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

Hello! I am having a beach wedding and have a chuppah. I am going to purchase the drapery myself and am going for a heavy look, not chiffon. I would like them to have a lot of play so I can tie them back with flowers. I am not sure if satin would be best or if there is a fabric heavy but not sheen?

What do you mean by "a lot of play"?

I would just go to your local discount fabric place and ask the clerks for help with what they have available. I would definitely not use satin for a beach wedding.

The fabric store was the one who said satin falls nicely. I think it will be too sheen. Chiffon is too sheer, maybe a cotton?

It sounds like you want a jersey cotton type of fabric to me.

Maybe even linen? That might get expensive though

Go the clearance section of the fabric store and see what is available. It is easy to unroll the fabric and see what drapes nicely and you like the look.

@Rachel, I agree!! And thank you for bringing up the tallis. My fiance is very handy and his brother is a contractor so I think we should be ok for sturdyness. I am concerned about the sane though. I know they should know their stuff, however we live in Ohio, so I am 100% sure they have never build on sand. I was thinking sand bags to anchor?

We just used family tallit for ours. We rented the frame of the chuppah from our florist. She installed in and I'm pretty sure they dug very deep to make sure it was stable. I personally wouldn't want sandbags at the base of the chuppah...

If it's not super synthetic it might get wrinkled easier ...

@LB, good point about sandbags. Your's is beautiful!!! How long did you need to make the fabric? Or did your florist do it for you?

Use cotton. If you are not using/purchasing a tallit, consider purchasing a tablecloth as it will already be hemmed. Remember that you need enough pole height to account for how much pole needs to be stuck in the sand and that it's still tall enough to allow for some drape in the fabric over your head.

You may want to consider get a beach umbrella sand screw to put the poles into.

Thank you thank you!!!!!! This is what I was looking for, I had no idea even what to use Smiley smile . Are there different types of cotton, or would any type work well, do you know?

Probably best to go to a fabric store and feel the weight for yourself. You may be able to purchase a drapery panel as well. Poly/cotton or cotton should be fine.

Also, if you are using birch or bamboo poles, you could have people hold the poles (which is more traditional) but if you do that, make sure they are down to the ground so no one is holding anything up.
