Fabric for draping?

FutureMrsH, on March 22, 2017 at 10:41 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 19

What fabric would you all recommend for draping? I'd like to drape the altar at my church in a sheer fabric and have lights strung through it. I have a vision in my head and I can't find pictures anywhere! I'll try it before the day of and if it's cheesy, I'll scrap it. I'd still like to drape the altar in some way, though.

I thought about tulle but worried it might be too stiff!

I don't think tulle would be too stiff. One of my BMs and I are working with tulle to make something like this. Organza is another good one. Oriental Trading has lots of it and tons of inspiration.

Chiffon might be nice if you don't like the look of tulle. You could always go to the fabric store to get a feel of the different types of materials available.

Joann has nice soft tulle that's not stiff at all (just don't get the glittery kind, that one is a little stiffer). It's also the cheapest option if you're on a budget and getting a ton, it's easy to buy in bulk.

Check with your church if you're even allowed to drape the altar. It's a sacred piece of furniture that symbolizes the presence of God in the church, so hanging lights and fabric from it to make it pretty seems a bit disrespectful. Most churches have rules about what can go on/under/around the altar.

MrsSkiToBe I've already asked. As long as we aren't nailing anything to it, it's okay.

Chiffon. The best way to get a bolt is to wait for Joann fabrics to have the coupon for 60% off one item coupon. The bolt will run you around $30

We got a nice fabric for our altar draping at JoAnns. We didn't want tulle so I found something that kind of looks like white sheer curtains. It looks great. I just went up and down every aisle until I found one that I liked! BEWARE though if you want it to look full and flowy you may need to get double of everything. We didn't know this until my coordinator showed us at a walk through

Good for asking OP, but I'm still sticking with it's disrespectful. If you were in a banquet hall or some other secular space, sure, but not an altar in a sanctuary. Churches are not backdrops.

    (And thanks, Nonna!)

I don't think its disrespectful. Different churches do different things. I think it highlights the altar. I have seen it done alot, its good that you ask the church first. You may want to buy the drapes with the lights already in them. if you can find it small enough for what you are trying to do, that way it lays on the altar.
