Fajita Bar for Wedding Reception? Opinions Please!!!!

futureafu, on February 23, 2010 at 2:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

Ok so On the Border has just given me a GREAT quote for a full fajita bar including everyones choice of steak, chicken, shrimp or pork it also includes all the fixings as well as chips and salsa for everyone. I just dont know if this is "wedding appropriate food" it will be a buffet style. I am Caucasian, my fiance is Nicaraguan (Spanish) and some of his family is well....uppity is all i know how to describe it as. I just wanted to know, without putting any kind of background into perspective..just tell me, if you walked into a buffet line at a reception and saw that the food was a fajita bar, what would be your first reaction? Thanks!

Yummy! can i come??? haha!!! i love me some mexican food!!! i think if it it set up right it can be wedding appropriate. but i think you need maybe good side dishes but really i think it leaves many options for ppl to have to eat and they dont even have to do the fajita style, they could make a salad out of it or even eat it plain.

Um I would do a fist pump cuz I love fajitas!!!! I don't think it's bad... we thought about doing bbq and how that may not be "wedding approporiate food" as well. I think its more about how the buffet is set up rather than what the food is... if they make the buffet table look nice and you use regular plates, not paper or plastic, it will fancy it up a bit. but fajitas are the best!!! mmmmm....

Anything goes with weddings these days! So many people do themes, or certain food, no alcohol, lots of alcohol. It's all about what the bride and groom want, and if you want a fajita bar, I say go for it!! If someone doesn't want a fajita, since it's a buffet, they can eat just chick, or just steak or something. Do it up!! Smiley smile

There is never a wrong time for mexican food, especially fajitas. Like someone else said, its not the food but the presentation. If the presentation looks good even before they get up to the buffet, that's what sets the mood. I want a fajita now.....I love On the Border! When & where are you getting married, lol.

My stomach is growling but I did read your topic as "Fajita bar for wedding reception? ONIONS please!!!!" Hahaha.

As for your question: Fajitas are a little messy if people are going to be in their Sunday best.

If you're going to do Mexican I would get quotes from non-chain places too. They might be less expensive and have better food.

If your FH's family has a Spanish background On the Border WILL NOT be good food to them!

Overall, if you've opened the door to non-traditional reception food then run with it!! Don't stop at On the Border- Cross that border baby!! I had considered using Paradise Bakery (don't know if you have them) and their soup and bread bowls-yummy!! Call around to local restaurants that you like and just see what they offer!

Good luck! Going for lunch now-thanks a lot!

I don't see anything wrong with the food selection. Plenty of people do buffets meals with food that is not nearly as good as a fajita layout. I do agree with Z that if your FH family enjoys authentic hispanic food they may not think on the border is good enough - I would talk to FH and see what he thinks. Otherwise I think its a great idea (especially if you have budget constraints) You could tie it into a whole hispanic theme for the reception if you wanted to. Salsa, nachos, etc etc

@futureafu, actually this is what my fiance and I are thinking about doing. We haven't spoken with the chef at the venue but I would love something like that myself and at least down here in south Texas that kind of food is really popular. Damn, making my mouth water!!

YUMMY!!!, my FH and I have both decided on buffet.

FUTUREAFU- It doesnt matter what other people think like i tell my peeps. People are always going to be talking no matter what. If you get New york steak "why did she get that so expensive" if you give something else why did they give that!!!.... so just aslong as thats what you want it shouldnt matter, at the end of the day Trust me they'll eat it lol

Sounds like a good idea to me! The food usually says something about the couple, with you doing the fajita's you are bringing in your ethnic, its a great idea. Go for it! Boy im starving, is it lunch time yet??

@ Z I agree with the non-authentic mexican food of On The Border but thats exactly what we are looking for, his family is Nicaraguan and their style of cooking is WAYYY different then mexican food. We thought about cuban food but it's too close to their style, and we figured if we did that they would think exactly along those lines...this isnt as good as abeulitas!!! lol also mexican is my ALL TIME FAVORITE food but yet fajita's are a bit "americanized" ...to be a good median in our opinion.

My sister had a wedding out in the country, it was very nice. And she had the same type of food, buffet style. I thought it was awesome and went perfectly with the type of wedding she had. I loved it.

OMG I think I have made up my mind, thanks everyone for all the positive responses..after all thats what every bride wants to hear! lol!!! Anyways on top of the awesome price quote from on the border, get this, they let you change the guest count up or down as many times you want up until the DAY BEFORE THE WEDDING!!!! This is GREAT for the last minute calls of I wont be making it anymore! No wasted money on food that wont be used!!! WOOO HOOO!!! ON THE BORDER HERE WE COME! Smiley smile

I agree with PP about it being fine... I would just be weary of how messy fajitas can get (especially in a wedding dress). I would be aware of this is you are renting linens, etc because if your guests get them really messy you could lose your deposit
