Fake calligraphy?

Mrs G, on July 18, 2013 at 12:14 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 21

So (mainly because I'm cheap and we're on an extremely tight budget) I think I've decided I'm going to try my hand at fake calligraphy. I've found a bunch of websites and I'm going to practice a WHOLE bunch until I can get it the way I like. I have a couple weeks before I'm going to mail the invites. Me in my infinite wisdom wasn't thinking and already stuffed the invitations into their envelopes...and I'm scared to mess up because we only have exact envelopes for each invitation...do you think putting a white label on our white envelope would look bad? Like writing the address on the white label so I have extras in case I mess up...and sticking it on my plain white envelopes.

Very laid back wedding...and I've already put a sticker with our return address on them.

My boss's wife did that. It took her a week to do all of the invitations. My boss was afraid to go home because all he heard was her cursing in her home office lol. Good Luck

I think it's a good idea to do the labels and stick them on. not sure what you mean by fake calligraphy, I did mine with calligraphy pens. just practice and you'll be fine!

Thats the route I would go for sure! I am actually using a calligraphy font on clear labels for mine so there is no way I can screw it up! I used them for the STD and everyone thought it looked just fine Smiley smile

I think that would be fine. Or buy more envelopes. I did the printing the addresses directly on the envelope then writing over with a gel pen. Takes forever but they look awesome. But I'm glad I had extra envelopes because I have more problems printing than writing.

I think clear labels would be fine. I am taking actual calligraphy classes and plan to address my envelopes on my own. This is going to be the death of me, especially as a left hander!

How about just using that money for labels and buying some extra envelopes?

I also did the printing lightly on them in a font and tracing with a gel pen. I loved how they came out. It was mindless work to just sit down at my coffee table and trace them while watching/listening to tv and didn't take all that long. I did it for about 50 invites, including outer, inner and rsvp envelopes.

I printed out the addresses in a scripty font and then cut them a placed inside the envelope. I used a fake lightbox (my tablet) to make the envelopes more see through so I could trace them easier. Basically the same concept as printing on the envelopes and tracing, but my printer damaged a few envelopes on the first try so I didn't want to risk it.

A couple other brides did the same technique that caaron did and their's came out great as well and it's another option. One bride used a pyrex dish flipped over with their tablet shining up underneath it. I couldn't do the lightbox technique because my linen envelopes were too thick for any light to shine through.

Buying more envelopes would be more of a pain then anything else. I bought my invites from VP and I'd have to order more and pay for shipping...a package of labels would be SO much cheaper in the end. Printing and tracing is a possibility but I wouldn't be able to start on it today. Hmm...I'm not sure.

See if you have a stationary store in your area. Hobby Lobby, Staples, or another office supply store should have extra envelopes.

If you are doing labels for your return address, I'd do them for the guest address also. Then you could even just print them with a calligraphy font that you like on your computer. You can do a border around the outside of it as well if you want to disguise the sticker edge.

I didn't like how the clear labels weren't really big enough. So I decided to trace them and had FH make a lightbox for me. I printed the addresses on paper, cut them to fit the envelopes and then traced on the lightbox. I think they came out pretty nice.

I'm planning to find a calligraphy font and then do a mail merge in word. I plan to print them out on the envelope. I tried it with some cheap envelopes and it came out ok...

Thats a good idea. It would look good even with the sticker and also insures you wont have any messups

I did what MrsO did, but for 93 envelopes. My carpal tunnel flared up the next week, but they turned out beautifully and I got tons of compliments.

Labels are totally fine and accepted these days, in fact they seem to be the norm in my circle. I just don't care for them, personally.
