Fake flowers under water - experiences?

Anonymous, on January 9, 2012 at 9:19 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 3

My centerpieces are going to have fake flowers under water with a floating candle at the top and some river rocks at the bottom... but as I was thinking about the flowers and water - I got worried. Are "silk" flowers really silk? Silk and water don't mix....so does anyone have experience with flowers under water? I'm not even sure my flowers are "silk" but to be safe...I am thinking I will take a petal or leaf from each of the flowers and test it because I don't need a last minute disaster! However, if anyone has any helpful hints or lessons learned, I'd love to hear them!!

Silk isnt "silk" but some do tend to look different when the material gets wet, and cheaper ones bleed and change the water color. They also tend to float rather than stay at the bottom. My first idea was 3 different size vases with rocks at the bottom, rose on that then a floating candle but I couldnt keep the rose from floating up and it didnt look like i want (I used real touch roses) I tried gluing them to the rock but after a couple hours in the water, they became unglued. Maybe if you have a longer, slimmer stem then mine had, you can twist the bottom part into a c shape and put the rock on top of them so that they keep it down and you still see the stem coming out of the middle. Good luck!

Hi Rebecca Smiley smile I am doing the same thing for centerpieces and the silk flowers should be fine under water. I would just do a mockup before you officially go with the fake flowers. The water will magnify the flowers, so if there are any imperfections on the fake flowers, they will be BIG. I originally wanted to go the cheaper route with the fakes, but decided on real flowers for the centerpieces, atleast.

Another idea for what Now-I-am Mrs. Clark said, you could use sinking lures to keep them down. They're fairly small
