Family Heirlooms

Margaret, on September 29, 2020 at 11:23 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 19

What family heirlooms are you incorporating into wedding? Will the be a part of Something Old / Something Borrowed, Something Blue? Or will you be incorporating them some other way?

I had a hard time finding my "Somethings" - But after much talk with my mom we decided I'd attach some very special momentos (family heirlooms) to my bridal bouquet. My grandmother's ring, a necklace charm my aunt gave me (scroll of a Leo Lion), a ring that my grandparents gave me for my 12th birthday, My Godmother's diamond watch (I may be wearing this) or one of the many items I've packed of hers for the wedding, and a necklace charm from my parents that I got when was very young (Letter "B" for my Hungarian nickname). Each of these pieces hold very special in my heart and while everyone (except my mom) will not be physically present at our wedding, they will be there through these special items.

I wore one grandma's "past, present, future" ring for our ceremony as my something borrowed. I also have a necklace with a photo of my other grandma that I wore around my bouquet as my something old.

Those are some really sweet momentos!

I will be wearing my grandma's veil. It's very special to me since she won't be able to attend in person. She lives out of state, and because of health reasons she can't travel. I'm very excited to wear it on my special day knowing she will be there in spirit.

My engagement ring is my "something old." It's a solitaire that belonged to my great grandmother in the 1920s.

My aunt made a pillow out of some of my grandparents' old clothes after they passed and we'll be using that pillow for the rings/ringbearer Smiley smile

My husband's grandparents on both sides are deceased so at our rehearsal dinner my brother read a passage from a bible that belonged to my husband's grandfather. He didn't have him read it at the wedding since we didn't have a religious wedding. As my something old, I attached a pair of earrings that belonged to my husband's grandmother. I originally was going to use a broach, but my florist forgot it.

My something old is a hand-made, lace handkerchief that my paternal grandmother carried at her wedding more than 80 years ago. She was very special to me, and she's gone now, so it's really an honor to carry it. She only had sons, so nobody to pass it down to, until I was born. I didn't even know about it until after she had passed away, and my grandpa gave it to me.

My engagement ring was my grandmother's. Also leaving the reception I will wear the coat and hat my mom wore leaving her wedding reception. There was no way I could have fit into her wedding dress!

How beautiful! The other day my FH pulled an old raincoat out of the closet and he looked at it funny. It was my Godmother's from the 50's - it brought a smile to my face remembering it and how happy I was when she let me have it.

I love that you're wearing your gram's engagement ring and your mom's coat and hat, I can't wait to see those pictures. I have this vintage image in my head, movie star like. I hope the photographer can capture that vintage image. Smiley smile

The hat and coat are pretty distinctive--think along the lines of Dr. Zhivago-- so I am hoping to get some pictures posed similar to my mom.

I incorporated touches of my grandmother everywhere in my wedding. From the drinks, to a photo of her with a candle burning, to the passages read. I also had her watch tucked in corset. I didnt want to wear it on my wrist as it would've looked really out of place but it's a beautiful silver watch with a periwinkle watch face and a diamond inside. Periwinkle sort of counts as blue right lol? It was my something old and something blue. Something borrowed were a pair of earrings my DH's cousin lent to me. Something new was my necklace. I don't think you have to necessarily have physical items to incorporate loved ones though if that's the ultimate goal. We're non-religious however my grandmas favorite bible verse was read at our wedding my her daughter. It was beautiful and made most of that side of my family tear up.
