Family member reading at Catholic wedding?

Honeybee, on July 24, 2017 at 11:10 AM Posted in Planning 0 19

I would really love to choose some special friends who were not able to be a part of my bridal party to do some readings during our ceremony. I am planning on having a 30 minute Catholic ceremony (not the full nuptial mass). Do friends/family normally get to perform a reading at these ceremonies? I am unsure.

It depends on the church. We started marriage prep at one church that wouldn't allow anyone to do it unless they were a certified reader at their own catholic parish (honestly didn't even know a certified reader was a thing). We ultimately changed our minds and married at H's childhood church, and they allowed us to choose who did the readings. I would check with your priest or marriage prep coordinator if you have one!

Lol @Kristin there are a lot of reasons we decided to leave that church both in the marriage prep process and altogether. I didn't do a ton of extra research into how other churches do it, so I assumed it was up to the church to make that policy.

I've never been to a wedding where the couple could not choose their own readers. For our ceremony we were able to select three readers, none of whom happened to be Catholic, and our priest never asked whether they were Catholic or if they belonged to my/any church, it was totally relaxed for us and I hope your church/celebrant will be equally accommodating.

(congrats on 5 stars, don't forget to request your shirt!)

My aunt and godmother did one of our readings, and then we asked a friend's wife to do another.

Thanks, everyone! Sounds like I will most likely be able to choose my own readers! So they normally read at least 2 passages even at the 30 minute long ceremony?

@Richard, because some people prefer to have a sacramental marriage in their church which is very important to them.

We are not doing a mass either and we have three readers (first and second readings, and intercessions).

We did the full mass and had three readers as well. First, second, and intercessions. From my understanding, the main difference of full mass and half mass is a shortened homily and no communion.

Our church required us to have our own readers.

And yes, @Richard - it was very important to us for both us and the future of our children to have our marriage blessed and recognized in our church.

@Honeybee We did a 30 minute ceremony as well, not the full mass. The priest did the welcoming prayer, then there was the first reading, a psalm, and a second reading. We chose those readers (they never asked us if they were Catholic either, they all just happened to be). Then the priest read the Gospel and gave a homily. After that we did all the marriage vows and blessing of the rings.

Just ask the church what their policy is.

Sure they can. We had my son and my dil. My brother did the prayer of the faithful. Two very good family friends were the Eucharistic Ministers and J's two cousins brought up the gifts to the altar.

And homemade wine by our wonderful friend for communion.

Richard, I have never heard of not letting you choose your readers. We're not so bad, really Smiley smile

When choosing readers try to pick one guest from the bride's side and one from the groom's side. Also be sure to ask these folks if they are comfortable with public speaking. Lastly, on your wedding day provide them with a hard copy of the given passage you'd like them to read. Best wishes!

IMO, couples can choose the readings and readers. Maybe ask your pastor/officiant about it?

We chose our readings- we have 3 for our full mass. None of them are Catholic, the people bringing up gifts for communion are also not Catholic. We got it approved.
