Father daughter dance… but father has Alzheimer’s

Amy, on August 11, 2024 at 12:40 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 2
Hello!
So my dad and I always had a very rocky relationship. We were working things out and getting to a better place but he now has Alzheimer’s. He mostly knows who I am or at least that I’m his daughter. I have to remind him constantly that I’m getting married and we’re doing a dance. I want to pick a song for me to him, but I’m having a hard time. Any suggestions? We were originally going to do My Wish, but it just doesn’t give me the feels I’m looking for.

My Girl is a nice light-hearted song that won’t get too heavy into things stemming from lost memory.

Also, did you and your dad ever have a song together that meant something to you? Your dance doesn’t have to be a specific father/daughter song. My dad and I danced to Waltz Across Texas because he used to randomly start waltzing with me and sing that song. Music is very powerfully connected to memory, so a song that’s personal might connect with your dad more than traditional father/daughter lyrics.

I would absolutely spend some time applying music therapy of sorts. Have a short list and spend an afternoon with him. Take breaks between songs. Try out each song and see if he stays engaged and enjoys the experience, and that's your winner!

I cannot imagine how difficult it must be but it's so wonderful to incorporate the traditions in the way that works best for any family! Congratulations to you, and I am quite certain the dance will be one to remember. ♥
