Father & Mother of Bride Attire?

Imani, on April 18, 2022 at 11:36 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 25
Does the father and mother have to match the bride? Or can they wear a color that’s apart of the wedding scheme?

They don't have to match her, to coordinate with her, not even to match/coordinate with each other or with the parents of the groom.
Nor Do they have to wear an outfit that's one of your wedding color palette.
My fiancé and I are not planning to make our parents match/coordinate with us nor with each other. If I were in your shoes I would ask them whether they would mind matching you, then I would go from there. They may want to match you, or your dad may want to match the groom's dad or your mom, maybe they may want to wear anything they want no matter if every

thing matches/coordinate and may think that you picking their outfit or the colors is an overstepping move.

    You should ask them first.

Definitely don't match the brid. In most of western culture it's a faux pas (especially if the mother wears white or ivory, it can be seen as trying to take attention away from the bride).

They can coordinate with the wedding colors, though. In my social circles, the mom always coordinates and the dad often does, though not always. They should match the formality of the event, so if it's a black tie wedding, dad needs a tux and mom needs a floor-length gown. They don't have to wear the same colors as the bridesmaids/groomsmen, but they can pick a complementary shade if they want. I'll try to find you some pics of weddings I've been to.
Best thing to do is ask your parents what they're comfortable with. Some don't like to be told what to wear and others appreciate extra guidance so the family photos look intentional.

I'm pretty sure they aren't supposed to match, but they just need to coordinate with your wedding colors. I'm pretty sure it's flexible, and it's your/your parents call to make if you want to match or not.

Thanks Lucy. I know my dad wants to match me but I haven’t talked to my mom. I know for my older sisters wedding she matched their wedding colors. They’d wanted everyone to coordinate for the wedding photos.

Interesting. Thank you for the insight. I had no idea. My friends wedding I was in last year - the brides mom matched the wedding colors. I can have my dad wear all black (I love black on black) and it’ll still look good for the photos. He wants to match me, but now that you said that it might not be the best idea. Also, for my mom Ill talk to her and see if she plans to match the wedding colors or not. I found a really nice black dress she could wear - but it’s not really her ‘style’ per se and I kinda want her to be comfortable you know?

Yeah I definitely wouldn't pick a dress for her. If she's willing to wear the wedding colors that's about as much as you can suggest. Your profile says your wedding color is champagne, which is a popular MOB dress color. But ultimately it's her decision, she's an adult who knows how to dress herself.

Thanks Emily. My dress is champagne - but maybe if they matched the wedding colors that might be fine. I don’t mind if they wear our colors but I’ll have to tell my dad he can’t match me ( but in the nicest way) and he’ll understand. He’s just happy to be walking me down the aisle.

Right - most importantly. I haven’t said anything to her about the dress I saw for her. I don’t want her to feel like i’m ‘demanding’ because that’s not how it is at all. I just wanted to know if they have to match me or the wedding colors or not at all. Thanks a lot Jasmine!

For the most part they can wear whatever they want, but they should match the level of formality of the event. FH and I included our dads in our tux group order so they'd look cohesive with everyone. I had suggested having the dads in a different color tie than the groom/ groomsmen, but FH wanted them to be the same, so that's what we did. As long as my mom and FH's mom don't wear white then I'm not too concerned with what color they wear. I'd imagine they'd wear colors that compliment the colors of our dads' tuxes, but that's up to them.

Thanks Paige! I’ll talk to Britany about including my dad in their group tux shopping. This way even if he doesn’t wear the same thing it’ll be cohesive.

She wants to wear the color of the wedding party, so if that’s what she wants she’s gonna be allowed to wear it! Her dress is gonna be designed different and the way she wishes. I think she will look amazing when she’s don’t making it.

No pictures???????????? Or color pallet? It sounds REALLY nice. Especially the silky red. Is it like a satin? I never thought about doing silver, I’m so used to seeing gold and champagne in weddings.
