Father/Daughter Dance for a Father that Wasn't Really Around

Melissa, on June 10, 2014 at 4:25 PM Posted in Planning 1 14

My parents divorced when I was 5 and my mom remarried when I was 9. My step-father raised me, so it is very easy for me to pick our song to dance to. I am also planning on dancing with my real dad.... He has been in and out of my life.... I see him once or twice a year. We dont have the typical father/daughter relationship so it is VERY difficult for me to pick a mushy father loving his daughter type of song.

Anyone else in the same boat? What songs did you pick from?

My father will not even be at the wedding. That being said, I am honestly considering doing a disco dance with my FFIL. He actually took disco lessons in the 1970's and I am a HUGE disco freak. If I can learn a dance on YouTube I might see if he will do it with me, because FH sure won't LOL!

I'm kind of in the same situation except I don't have a step father and my real dad was never in the picture. I have no memories of him after the age of maybe seven. If you want to get your disco on then go right ahead. The important thing is that you are happy. I'm not having anyone walk me down the aisle nor am I doing a father daughter dance. I might do a dance off with my momma.

Do you have to have one? Many people don't.

I was in the same situation as you. I didn't do a dance with my real dad and it would have been way I awkward. It just wasn't worth the anxiety on my wedding day.

My dad and I aren't super close and my family and I aren't very touchy-feely, so, for a variety of reasons this dance would've been awkward and I opted not to do one. It is a little weird since you're doing a dance with your stepfather, but, I wouldn't feel pressured to do one with your bio dad.

I know this is an old feed, but i am in the EXACT same situation! I'm super close with my stepdad and not so close with my bio dad, we maybe text like once a month and I'll see him once a year if that. He is still contributing a little bit to the wedding and I know his feelings will be hurt if I dance with my stepdad and not him. Like you, I have NO CLUE what to dance to with him because we don't have the typical father daughter relationship. My step father and I will be dancing to "He Didn't Have to Be" by Brad Paisley. It speaks so true to our relationship.

Any ideas for songs with my biological dad, or what did you end up doing with your biological father?

I know this is an old thread, but I was having this same problem (well not exactly, everyone's situation is different) but I noticed there wasn't really any answers that helped. So I thought about maybe "Because You Loved Me" or "You're Gonna Miss This" or "My Wish". I'm sure there's a bunch of other songs, but for my situation those are mushy without being specific about the relationship between the father and daughter. I grew up without my father though we're close now, so it was difficult to find songs that didn't talk about raising the daughter and childhood memories. So I'm looking at some generic feelings songs.
