Father/daughter Dance- Not Close

Jessica, on February 24, 2021 at 9:51 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 12
My dad and I aren't very close, but I would still like to have a dance with him. I can't seem to find anything that isn't sappy.

Any suggestions?

If you aren't close then skip the dance because it sends the message that you are. Otherwise go very neutral such as What A Wonderful World

You don’t have to pick a sappy song. Maybe find something that was special for the two of you at one time or something that is fairly generic.

    This.

Do you have a movie you both like, or a band?

Go through that music, see if there's something fun.

To everyone recommending she should just skip the dance altogether, you’ve clearly never experienced distance in your family. Just because you aren’t super close with a parent, doesn’t mean there isn’t a feeling of love somewhere deep down or the desire to honor this person with a dance on your wedding day. She still wants to do the dance, as stated. Just not to a sappy song, which I can understand. I, too, do not want a sappy song for my dance with my father. While I don’t have any song recommendations for you at this time, Jessica, I just wanted to say I understand where you’re coming from and do not agree with the others on skipping the dance altogether. You’ll find your song.

This! I love my dad very much, but we're not close. My parents are divorced, and my dad has moved around a lot and lives a decent distance away, but just because we aren't close doesn't mean I don't love him and wouldn't want to share a special dance with him at my wedding.

"Isn't she Lovely" by Stevie Wonder is a good song, it's not necessarily indicative of a super close relationship. And here's a list that has some pretty good recommendations too that you could try and find artists that seem in your genre: https://www.myweddingsongs.com/wedding-song-lists/father-daughter-songs/

Ultimately, you could ask your dad to listen for songs, or if he has something he'd like to dance to at your wedding too.

Never assume to know someone's relationship or lack of. Countless people have experienced distance but everyone deals with it differently and know they will be judged either way. Some put on a smile for others so the rest don't judge and some prefer to cut off the grief. Neither is right or wrong.

My Wish by Rascal Flatts is a good one. Or just an instrumental without lyrics

It doesn't have to be a sappy love song with a lot of meaning! It could be a song that brings back a memory, or one you simply just like.

Is there a song from your childhood you listened to together in the car? at home? a band he really likes that you associate him with?

When thinking of songs for my dad and I almost chose "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)" by Nine Days because I cried at everything when I was younger and he would always sing this to me when I was acting up.

Thank you, all of this was perfect and exactly how I feel. My mom passed a couple of years ago and I'm honoring her at my wedding with a seat, and a candle. My dad and I may not he close, but I want him to feel included.

If you're looking to cut the sappiness, look at instrumental versions of some more traditional father/daughter dance songs. Sometimes just taking away the words can take a song from sappy to just being a beautiful melody to dance to.

You can dance to everything you want: Michael Jackson, Bee Gees or even to AC/DC if you both want it lol.
I attended a wedding in 2012 where the bride and her dad danced to "I'm sexy and I Know it" by LMFAO 😀 I also watched a groom and mom dancing to "stayin alive" , ... You can watch father-daughter dances and mother-son dances on youtube, you'll find out that every music styles can be played for a bride-father dance , as long as you pick a song you both like.
