Father/Daughter dance: what did you choose?

SoontobeStuddard, on December 1, 2015 at 10:16 AM Posted in Planning 0 21

I'm struggling to come up with solid father/daughter dance songs. I plan on sharing a dance with both my dad and my stepdad during the reception.

I originally had chosen "Stealing Cinderella" by Chuck Wicks, but after reading the lyrics, I've changed my mind.

We're fans of country, classic rock, and Motown.

(I used "My Little Girl" and "There You'll be" at my first wedding, which are great songs, but I don't want to reuse them).

I also used "My Little Girl." An option would be "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts since that one seems to be pretty popular at weddings lately.

I also danced with both my dad and step dad. I actually asked them to chose what song they would like to dance to.

My dad chose "My Little Girl" - said he's always imagined dancing with me on my wedding day to that song.

My step dad chose "My Wish" - this one almost had me crying because the lyrics are so perfect for our relationship!!

I used Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. It took forever to find something. I can't stand country and so many father daughter songs are too mushy or have awkward lyrics.

Yeah, I can't do overly mushy, either. So, I loved her first and Butterfly Kisses are off the list, too.

I love Fleetwood Mac, so I will definitely have to add that to my (very short) list.

My dad chose "Walk with You" by Edwin McCain. It's very clear that it's for a wedding, so no interpreting the lyrics needed. It's a beautiful song!

We used a cover of "Forever Young" by Rhiannon Giddens and Iron & Wine that was featured on the finale of the show Parenthood. It was one of my favorite moments from the wedding-- sharing a link in case you want to listen Smiley smile

My dad chose "The Way You Look Tonight" by Sinatra. We had everyone come up and dance halfway through. It was really nice. Have you heard "Daughter" by Loudon Wainwright III? I love that song.

I asked my dad to pick the song. It's really hard to listen to a song and be like "yup, that's my relationship with my dad/step-dad" especially for us since a lot of songs that are suggested involve little girls stolen away (not our relationship at all, he specifically told me that no one is stealing me, I made my own adult decision and he doesn't want to disrespect that). Maybe ask them what they'd like to dance to?

Thanks for all of the wonderful suggestions!

@Jeanne - you're right, it's hard to find lyrics that fit the situation!

I'll be using "Daughter" by Loudon Wainwright III. The first time I ever heard it, maybe 10 years ago, I knew it would be perfect for my dad and I.

Its beautiful, not sappy, and fairly short. Smiley smile

We did Eric Church's Sinners Like Me. I really went back and forth with it, it's def not anything traditional, and I wasn't sure if I was going to go through with it until the DJ asked me the night of what we were dancing to. I just thought it fit us, my mom's side is uptight Catholics and I feel like I take after my dad a little more. It just seemed right.

Dad - You're gonna miss this, Trace Adkins

Stepdad - Have I told you lately, Rod Stewart

My dad is always talking about how much he misses us being home and I'm not overly vocal with the "I love you" stuff with my stepdad even though he means the world to me. So they fit our situations beautifully.

These are all lovely. I'm dancing with my Grandpa (he doesn't know that yet, I'm surprising him at Christmas) so I'll have to listen to all these. I'm hoping they don't go to father/daughter in the lyrics. Anyone else dance with their grandpa?
