Father/daughter-in-law Dance

RKeir, on July 26, 2018 at 11:11 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 19

I've been searching the last two weeks for a song my father-in-law and I could dance to-- I'm admitting defeat. Everything I've found is either the mushy 'daddy's little girl' or dangerously borders incest-- NOT my cup of tea.

I've asked both my husband and step-mother-in-law for ideas. My husband's been utterly useless and the only song my SMIL came up with was 'My Wish' by Rascal Flats... Which is #2 on my most hated song list. #1 is 'Don't Stop Believing' by Journey. My graduating High School decided those were their 'theme songs' and played them DAILY over the loud speakers.

SO. I need some help from you ladies on this one!

I didn't want a mushy sing for my Dad either bc our relationship is rocky. I still haven't decided for sure but I'm leaning towards Wildflowers by Tom Petty.

I'm assuming that this is because the OP doesn't have a relationship with her father or her father is no longer with us, and she still wants the experience of the father daughter dance.

How about There You'll Be by Faith Hill?

It is traditional for the bride to dance with all manner af relatives at her wedding, but rarely as the only ones on the floor except with groom, or father. But it's pretty common to announce, FIL and the bride will lead off the next dance, please everyone join in. If you have to try so hard and still have none whose lyrics fit, go in another direction. Choose an easy dance, like a walz, good for unfamiliar dance partners. Anyone who can count to 3 can learn in 1 minute, and be proficient enough to do it with others in five minutes.. And the correct posture is at full arm's distance. Meant for dancing in long swaying skirts, Choose one with a tune familiar to many, but where few will know the lyrics, if there are any, and have a short instrumental break between songs. A swinging Strauss waltz, or a slow modern one like Ashokan Farewell. Or because of revivals, 4 generations know Shall we Dance. from the musical King and I. That is very upbeat , with no suggestions of close personal love. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ngjd8PntsYc

That's a funny oldie, but everyone from Duke Ellington Nd Artie Shaw big bands, to Disney to Sinatra, has mostly instrumental versions. In an old show, Sinatra sings, the is quiet while he dances with someone, ? Liza Minnelli? But the tune is known by many.

Trying to think of songs I would feel comfortable dancing with my FIL to...
I love the idea of something classic, like Frank Sinatra’s “Come Fly With Me” (not too lovey) or maybe Stevie Wonder’s “Sunshine of My Life”
Also, are you familiar with the song “Smile”? It’s been covered by a ton of people...here’s my favorite version (from Glee): https://youtu.be/5bZxamUU0x4
Here are some otherideas: Bruno Mars - “Count on Me”, James Taylor - “You’ve Got a Friend”, Celine Dion - “Because You Loved Me”

Some people opt for them, others don't.

Our relationship hasn't always been smooth- he's a wonderful man though. I just have anxiety and trust issues out the wazoo. Despite this, he's kindly accepted the task of officiating our renewal and even offered to put funds towards it. I want him to feel loved and included, just like my dad.

My mother passed away back in 2009, so no, my husband won't have a dance with her. He will be dancing with our little four year old daughter though.

I actually hate the song "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts. As mentioned, my SMIL actually suggested it.

The lyrics: "Shall we still be together with our arms around each other and shall you be my new romance."

So, definitely NOT this one, but thank you for the other suggestions. I actually have a playlist of piano compositions of songs that will be played during dinner! I never thought to use one for this as well!

Thank you for your suggestions! I absolutely LOVE Frank Sinatra, but I actually kind of like the the idea of the Bruno Mars - "Count on Me" one! I'm putting it through with my SMIL and my husband to see what they think!

I always wished "What a wonderful world" was better to dance to, but without a consistent clear rhythm it is so hard with an unfamiliar partner . But if you like Sinatra, a couple hours going through old album stuff on YouTube might help. At least half his stuff is not boy girl romance. And many done later by so many folks people forget he had some terrific old arrangements that made those songs classics. If you use Mars for FIL dance, you still may get some playlist ideas for things you like, but have not heard lately. And good for a mixed generational crowd.
