Father/Daughter Song

Kelly, on June 9, 2014 at 7:35 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 25

What are you dancing to??? Every website I go to has the same songs, half of which don't even seem appropriate for a father/daughter dance!! I would like something sort of different, not the typical song about a father giving his daughter away. Elvis would be great, but he only has one about after a divorce haha. I have every other song picked out, except this one!

We're doing something super untraditional. My dad and I used to always watch "The Jungle Book" when I was little and he would put me on his shoulders while we danced around to "The Bare Necessities" so that will be our father/daughter song.

We are dancing to Always on My Mind by Michael Bublé, it was most fitting with my father, I had a hard time finding a song and this one was the best fit for us period.

We're doing Fly Me to the Moon. I've known we'd dance to that song since I was in middle school.

I let my dad pick a song and he picked "I Loved Her First" by Heartland. Very sappy and not something I would have picked, but I wanted him to feel involved. Fortunately, we have a band with a talented singer so it won't sound so country and she'll slow it down a bit.

We are doing "Cinderella" by Steven Curtis Chapman. All the weddings that I've been to have either done "Butterfly Kisses" or "I Loved Her First" so I wanted to do something that I hadn't seen at any of the weddings I've attended. I thought about "I Won't Let Go" by Rascal Flatts, but Cinderella is just so me and my dad and not totally overdone...yet

I let my dad pick and he picked "Forever Young" by Rod Stewart. Apparently he has always loved it, and it is a song to his kid. Also, it is not one of the ones you hear at every third wedding

I'm dancing with my dad. Daddy dance with me by Krystal Keith. It took me a lot of time to find something that fit.

"When You Need Me" by Bruce Sprinsteen

My dad was adamant that he did not want a song that was about a dad losing his little girl or giving her up. ("This is not a competition.") After much searching, I found this tune by one of his favorite artists. It was perfect for us.

I'm leaning towards the Bruce Springsteen song that Songbird used...my mind will probably change though. lol. I am looking for something that you don't hear over and over as a daddy daughter song, it's taken me forever and I'm still not having a ton of luck. My dad wasn't really there for me most of my childhood, so we don't have all these great memories. He came back into my life around 16-17 and now we are close...so it's just tough. I know people won't even remember what we danced to, but I wanted it to be somewhat special. Following this for sure!

FH and I agreed and are adamant about not asking my dad for ANY money for the wedding (my parents are divorced, mom is remarried and dad is on a fixed income). With that being said, I did let him know that he had one job for the wedding and that is to pick the song we dance to. Right away he said "Earth Angel" its and old song from the 50s by The Penguins and it seems to fit just right for us!

Maybe Butterfly Kisses (so cliche, but it is an inside joke between the 2 of us) or Just The Way You Are by Billy Joel.

My dad picked Cinderella by Stephen Curtis Chapman. He heard it on the radio and fell in love. Didn't tell me about it until we went to pick my dress out (daddy's girl) and he played it and we danced at the store, in my dress. I think everyone was crying at that point. I can't wait to dance with my dad at the wedding!!

This might sound dumb, but we're dancing to "Tale As Old As Time" from Beauty and the Beast. It was may favorite movie when I was little and my dad would always be goofy and quote the beast. I didn't want the typical "I Loved Her First" song since a lot of people pick that song, and I figured the song from Beauty and the Beast is unique. The lyrics might not really fit, but it's slow and dance-able and definitely hits home with us!
