A few weeks ago someone made a post in the forum about possibly getting a faux wedding cake. I had never thought of that before. So a quick Etsy search I found a ton of them. The vendor was awesome to work with and their prices are very reasonable! I sent her a description of the cake I wanted and in less than five minutes she sketched it out and e-mailed it for my approval. It was absolutely perfect! She sent me a picture of the finished product before she shipped it out tomorrow. Her customer service skills are FANTASTIC!

Very cute! What are you planning on doing with it after the wedding? Displaying it in your house?

She nailed your design. Good for you! Forget all of the opinions of this is what you want. I thought about doing this also. I wanted an affordable beautiful cake that also tastes delicious. My favorite bakery has the best cakes that I've ever tasted in my life, but the wedding cakes don't look so hot. That's when the owner told me about faux cakes. She asked me when was the last time that I was at a wedding and looked at the cake after the couple cut it. I thought back to the many weddings that I've attended, and realized that she was right. So after pricing faux cakes, I couldn't justify paying $200+ for a photo prop, so we decided to do a $74 3-tier chocolate cake with buttercream icing from Sams club and round cakes from my favorite bakery. We're getting the groom's cake (red velvet) from another baker who makes very very beautiful cakes. Only the 3-tiered And groom cakes will be on display. So, for less than $250, we'll have 3 flavors and everyone will be happy.

@Rachel - I prefer the phrase (which is apparently a new concept) - "It's my wedding and I'll do what I want to". That has a much more honest and authentic ring to it.

I'm all for "what you see is

what you get".....we aren't skimping on the cake...its a staple of the wedding.

@Kristin before I make an incorrect assumption let me ask ---- have you attended a wedding of a close family member or a really close friend?

I really don't get the big deal. I mean, it's pretty common to have a cake and then also serve sheet cake. Seriously, why is this such a big deal?

Also, I'm so bloody sick of telling people that their wedding is about the guests. It's not. Absolutely not. You have to be nice to your guests maybe. You should ideally provide a certain level of hosting (though that absolutely does not require free alcohol). But a wedding is about the couple, not anybody else. From the ceremony through the reception, it is about the people who are getting married and MAYBE their family. Maybe.

Perhaps we have a different perception of what rudeness is.

And I prefer the phrase, "What the hell?" when I discover that what I've been looking at is a fake cake with only two real slices shoved between the Styrofoam discs. Oh yeah, that's a topic for discussion as we're served Costco, lol.

Yes, it's your wedding and you'll do what you want -- it's obvious that this is your approach. Your guests, however, have the right to say, to each other, "OMG...really, it's Styrofoam? The wedding cake is Styrofoam? Hahahahaha."

Come on, OP, you know there's something a little odd about this -- otherwise you wouldn't have capped "SSSSHHHH!" in your thread title. It won't be a secret, lol.

@Kristin The whole point of the ceremony is to get married - and your guests are there to share in that celebration with you.

To be quite honest, I wouldn't care as long as what I'm served is delicious.

We had a fake cake come with the package at the venue. The top layer was real, the middle had a part to cut, and the bottom was fake. The sheet cake in the back was delicious. Everyone knew the cake was fake and found it pretty hilarious. They also raved about the cake. The pastry chef on site is to die for. Also, we had a whole Viennese table so people had plenty of dessert options.

@Rachel - Girl please - I've lived long enough and I know my friends and family enough to leave the shallow thinking folks in our circle who would nit pick our wedding to death when they're not paying for our wedding at the house.

I should add, I firmly believe the wedding is all about the guests. We had top shelf alcohol and delicious food all night. (Including the sheet cake and Viennese Table.)

I'm sorry, I find this a little weird and dishonest. I designed the cake I could afford, it looks prettier to me that way, knowing it's fully edible lol.

I like my cake. As long as I get some, and it's yummy, I personally don't care. I'd probably enjoy the shhet cake more anyway because I find most icing to be too rich and scrape it off anyway. Let's not even touch fondant. Bleh...

FYI, Nothing Bundt Cakes offers free tastings. I got an email from them recently after attending a bridal show. We already have a cake selected, but I'm soooo tempted to go just for free cake. I'm too honest for my own good... *sigh*

She's not buying this thing to hide the sheet cake. She wants the pretty cake but isn't willing to spend nearly a grand to have it made out of cake when she can spend half that and people still get cake and she gets the pretty thing she wants.

Seriously, do you throw a fit if somebody has a wedding dress custom made to look like a designer $6k dress they can't afford? Do you throw a fit when somebody spray paints things gold instead of plating them or covering them in gold leaf? I sure hope not.
