A few weeks ago someone made a post in the forum about possibly getting a faux wedding cake. I had never thought of that before. So a quick Etsy search I found a ton of them. The vendor was awesome to work with and their prices are very reasonable! I sent her a description of the cake I wanted and in less than five minutes she sketched it out and e-mailed it for my approval. It was absolutely perfect! She sent me a picture of the finished product before she shipped it out tomorrow. Her customer service skills are FANTASTIC!

Anyone not using anything as a prop for photos, please raise your hand.

I personally don't care at all that she's using a fake cake. It's not my wedding. But I'm still as entitled to my opinion as anyone else. Her reaction to the opinions was part of the issue here and it appears to have been hidden. If you can't handle all of the comments you may get, don't post on a public forum. Also don't get so mad over other's opinions. After all, opinions and excuses are like armpits, everyone has them and they all stink or so I've been told.

I don't think it's an option I would go with for my own wedding, but as a guest I don't care one way or the other if the cake displayed is fake or real as long as I get cake from somewhere lol do what works best for you OP

As usual, my opinion differs from the masses LOL...but I think it's a great money saver! The cake is beautiful and you still get the pictures you wanted. It's about what YOU want for you and your husband's wedding day.

I'm so sick of seeing "the wedding reception is about your guests"...it's simply NOT! The bride and groom are getting married. The party is to celebrate the bride and groom. It's just like having a birthday for yourself (where you pay for everything), and saying that you want to make the guests happy. Ummmm no....it's our day and about OUR marriage. If people don't like it, don't come. Period. I'm not spending all this money and doing this stuff for you. 9 times out of 10 the guests are not even paying attention to centerpieces, table decor, etc. they are there to celebrate your love and anyone who's not shouldn't be there. @Terri do you boo! It looks like my wedding cake, except the colors are maroon and gold and there's a little more detail. If my cake didn't already come with my venue, I probably would be changing mine to a faux cake too. Spend money on what matters to YOU!

Awesome idea and it's beautiful! I've been to a few weddings that have had faux cakes and served sheet or cupcakes. Nobody cared..cake is cake Smiley smile

@MsWinterWed Except the wedding reception is about the guests...Like that's precisely what it is. It's a thank you to the guests for attending your ceremony. The ceremony is what is all about you two.

I’m not getting the fake cake. Is it iced? If not what’s on the outside? Won’t it look fake? I’m so confused guys

I invited people to my wedding because I could not imagine spending one of the happiest days of my life without them. If I wanted to put on a show of pomp I would do what I want and televise the affair via a webcast. I want to make sure my guests have a good time not because etiquette tells me so, but because I actually care about them. If that means me getting a cheaper dress or smalle floral arrangements so be it.

I'm not a faux cake person, but it looks beautiful! I'm glad they were able to do just what you wanted!

I don't really care about the fake cake, as long as the real cake tastes good. However, it seems that you are trying to hide it from your guests, which seems like a flawed plan. They will probably figure out that the cake they are eating is not the cake that was displayed, since they won't look the same.

ETA: Also, what does it matter if it is just a photo prop? Extravagant real cakes don't taste any better than simple cakes. They are just as much a photo prop as a fake cake and I have literally never seen anyone get upset about someone getting one. Most lavish things in a wedding are there just to look pretty. No one needs a fancy dress, but at lot of people get them to feel pretty and look nice in pictures. No one needs to wear make up, but every thread about not wearing making up everyone screams that you won't look as nice in your photos. I don't understand the uproar over a fake cake.

I think I would just feel like I'm wasting $165 for the cake. But if you can resell it guess you'll get some money back.

I am honestly more surprised that people expect to have the same looking piece of cake in front of them as how the wedding cake looks. If I go to a wedding and the cake they cut into is white with vanilla frosting... and I get served red velvet, I'd be the last one to complain because I'm getting cake. Seriously, what are they going to do, go up to the bride and groom and ask why it doesn't match? Or worse, talk crap as they leave the wedding because they didn't get a piece from the actual wedding cake?? I don't get it. But then maybe my expectations aren't that high.

Well, I was reading all the comments until Nothing Bundt Cakes came up!

We are also doing bundtinis from them! It was half the cost of all the wedding cakes we were quoted! (Chicago area here)

We did not get free tastings though >Smiley sad and they knew we were inquiring about weddings. We paid full price to try 3 flavors.

Can sone one explain the fake cake? What do they use to make the icing? Is the cake styrofoam? How does it not get damaged?

That's actually a decent compromise for those who want to have a beautiful tier cake for pictures but don't want to pay he big ticket price. !!

It looks great! I honestly didn't know this was a thing until your post, so thanks for the info! Maybe I'm not the norm, but I know I wouldn't personally care if I wasn't eating the "real" cake...All I want is a tasty piece of cake!

    Well said Terri.

I'm guessing the cake is just made with the same stuff as the display cakes that bakeries already have. I thought it was still real frosting or fondant on top of styrofoam.
