Favors that don't suck?

Mika, on September 5, 2012 at 8:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 55

Ok, frankly, I'm opposed to the whole idea of favors in the first place, because I think they're a waste of money that nobody will remember, and knowing our guests, I'm pretty sure they'd be much happier with an extra $300 in the booze budget, but my mother disagrees. Like, she REALLY disagrees. When she asked what I was planning for favors, I said that I had been intending to skip them because I couldn't even remember what the favors were for the last several weddings that I've been to, and most people don't even take them. She was HORRIFIED at the idea of skipping them. She is paying for the majority of the wedding, and I really do value her oppinion, so I guess I'm going to try to find some favors, but the budget is already really tight. Do you gals all have some suggestions that are SUPER cheap sot hat I don't have to take away from things we care about and also that people won't just throw away at the end of the night?

I'm considering either heart shaped seed paper and a little message to plant and watch it grow like our love and marriage or something. Or I'm really tempted with lottery tickets and a message saying hope you get as lucky as we have Smiley smile but I know people might think the lottery one is tacky lol. Fun tho!

I like the seeds you can plant to remember the special occasion and usually they are really cheap and you can get the packet custom made for your wedding. I am trying to be as green as possible and I will probably be doing this.

I had butterfly shaped paper with seeds embedded. They were a hit, maybe one or two left behind Smiley smile)

I like the seed paper idea... Is it inappropriate for a November wedding?

The lottery tickets would be fun. I would think it was awesome as a guest, but I also know some people who would find it tacky, so I guess we have similar tastes Smiley smile

Edible is always good too. That's a safe bet that most people will enjoy.

My mom made one of her cookie recipes, we packaged them in little glassine bags and then wrapped them up in little boxes from efavormart. A little time consuming but inexpensive and personal b/c it was one of her favorite recipes.

You could do mini cupcakes in a box....many bakeries charge $1 each for those, and they would fit really well into 3x3 favor boxes which you can buy cheaply in bulk online.

Or a popcorn bar with take home bags...or a candy bar with take home bags....

We were going to do a charity donation.

FH and I were each going to pick a charity and do half the tables one and the other half the other... I never liked favors and this wouldnt be something they would have to take home with them.

I was going to pick the USDA's Plant-a-tree program. (I am a horticulturist-plant geek!) For $10 (per table) you get 8-12 trees planted in a national forest...

    http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c4/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gDfxMDT8MwRydLA1cj72DTUE8TAwjQL8h2VAQAMtzFUw!!?ss=110312&navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=fsbdev3_018720&navid=091000000000000&pnavid=null&position=Not%2520Yet%2520Determined.Html&ttype=detailfull&pname=Tonto%2520National%2520Forest-%2520Home

Any charities would work. What do you and your FH feel strongly about?

Also, if you have grandparents like I do that are very conservative, they hate lottery tickets... So going that route would depend on your guests.

I vote edible, what about a candy buffet with bags for the guest to take home as their favors? you can get Halloween colored candy etc and they are cheaper on sale after Halloween lol.

You could always make chocolate molds and such. If you have a fall theme you can get some leaves or pumpkin shapes etc.

I will be making some of these star wars guys for our wedding Smiley laugh

I've always heard that ediible is always a hit so...I'm doing hershey kisses in little favor boxes. "love and kisses from the Mr. & Mrs.". I'm hoping I get the candy on sale as my wedding is after Halloween. I already found the boxes at Marshalls (of all places) for $7.00 for a box of 50. I figure total cost for 100 boxes of candy is around $20.00. My guest count is approx 75 so I should have extra's if people want to take additional.

If u don't want to do them then don't. Mom can have the final say in everything! Lol. I actually love favors, my guests at the rehearsal dinner will be getting cheesy favors too personalized bottle opener keychains and koozies that say" to have and to hold and to keep your beer cold" hopefully used on the wedding day pre-gaming and after party as well as the cookout the day afterSmiley smile

I am doing coffee beans, in small burlap bags and on the outside it will say "Love is Brewing"...

I feel like the don't totally suck, because we are doing gourmet, flavored coffee and they will smell amazing! Plus, we will do enough f 1 cup of coffee at least, so everyone will get coffee! And wh doesn't love coffee???

    I LOVE coffee! Smiley smile

Lesley, I LOVE the lottery ticket idea! Honestly, if we hadn't already made our sauerkraut and bought mason jars and the stuff to label/decorate them, we would probably be doing that! Smiley smile

FH and I are both very German and we both LOVE sauerkraut! My family does lots of canning (we've done homemade jams/jellies, salsa, etc, including sauerkraut).. and I had seen a lot of ideas for homemade favors (jams/jellies, honey, marinara sauce, etc) and we decided the sauerkraut was a fun alternative to a really sweet idea! Smiley smile We're going to package them in mason jars with fabric tied around the tops and labels on the base.. around $200

You know your crowd your best. What do you think they would like??

We're doing cool cups [also known as koozies, but we don't call them that for some reason haha]. It's very much our crowd!
