Feather Centerpieces.

TheFutureMrsLind, on March 30, 2011 at 3:10 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 17

So I'm starting a DIY venture tomorrow as a test run for my reception centerpieces. I'm still not quite sure what I want, but I'm thinking that perhaps an ostrich feather centerpiece would be cool to have for the reception.

I'm just realizing now though that REAL ostrich feathers a tad pricey. I'm wondering if any of you know where I can get faux ones?? Or any other cool, classy, pretty centerpiece ideas that look beautiful but don't cost a whole ton?

Thanks!

Here are some cute ideas that I'm looking into:

And also, her is my venue, however, our table cloths will be black with damask overlays probably, and black or white napkins. Very little red. Just a splash here and there.

aaaannnnd also a picture of the table numbers that i am strongly considering using.

You could alternate high and low vases to save money too.

Or if you like the rose ball (pomander) look that you made, you can put those pomanders on the table - high and low - The pomanders can also be double use - they can be chair decorations for the ceremony.

    Hayley,

How hard do you think it would be to make feather pomanders and then transfer those from my ceremony to the reception? Do I use one boa per styrofoam ball? I already have some vases I got from the dollar tree that I'm hoping I can throw them on top of for the reception. Smiley smile They are just about 7 x 3 if Im making a rough estimate.

    Thanks for all the ideas!

Also, how do you think these would look with the maribou feather boas? Or maybe alternating the type of feathers on the balls. My colors are chocolate and tiffany blue... Not really sure if I would like a brown feather ball, what do you think?

Hmmm... I tried to make one today using feather boa's and wire. Like, the boa with a wire through it so it's stiff. Then I stuck them in some foam in an eiffel tower vase. It looks kinda stupid... I'm gettin frustrated! Lol The dumb ostrich feathers that I want are soooo dang expensive! I am not going to pay three dollars a feather when I need like twenty or so to make one centerpiece. What do you guys think about roses in a globe/pomander in an eiffel tower vase? or maybe just roses in a bud vase?

IDK... i'm going to keep trying to work on and enhance the one I started working on today... hopefully it works out.

I'll post pictures once I'm done with it.

I was thinking to take bobby pins an use that to go around the seam that goes down the center of the boa and then stick the ends into the foam ball.... anchor it at the tip of the ball and then wrap around... but that is just me thinking.. I have not made one yet.. just saw the images on line on someone's blog...

The rose pomanders look really great too... and you can use them on the chairs for the aisle...

    good luck

    Another.... and her "instructions"

I used what I had, which was some 3 inch styrofoam balls (end result is about 6-7 inches with materials). I attached a strand of crystal-like garland first to the plain strofoam ball. I secured it with hot glue. Then, I started wrapping the feather boa around & round, being sure to attach with hot glue after the positioning was right. Depending on how full you want it, you can keep wrapping the feathers around.

Lastly, I experimented with one of the "blinged out" brooches that I got at Forever 21 a few weeks ago (posted with the ribbon bracelets).

I also added a little strand of crystal garland to the bottom of the pomander. I really don't plan to spend alot on brooches for each pomander, so I'm going to use vintage crystal earrings for the rest. That way, I can buy in sets.

Ok... these are Crazy.... glowing feather balls.... she bought battery operated balls that change colors (4 for $18.59 each )(save-on-crafts.com) .... some boas... took the feather off the boa and used spray glue to attach them...

maybe strip the boa and try spray glue if you don't want them sticking out as much...

Hayley, thank you so much for the messages! Wow... the glowing feather balls are awesome!! I think I am going to attempt Feather Ball Pomanders, so I can hang them from the chairs and then move the into the reception hall for centerpieces. I'm going to fill my cylinder vases with water pearls and aqualites... but I can't decide if I should get clear pearls and then use a colored light? Or colored pearls and a clear light? OR colored pearls with a coordinating colored light?

    LOL

Now to just find the best price on some teal boas!

Emily-In Google enter bulk ostrich feathers, or wholesale ostrich feathers.....lots of sites will pull up, but with some digging I think you may be able to find a less expensive price, or some alternatives that might bring the price down a bit.
