Feedback Wanted: Reception Timeline

Chelsea, on March 15, 2020 at 8:01 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 4

Hi all!

I am planning a Sunday wedding because it is so much cheaper (saving me $2,000 vs. Saturday date). We've decided to start the ceremony around 3 o'clock. My venue rental is only 8 hours, but I feel like that is fine for a Sunday. I can buy an extra hour for a small fee, so I may go ahead and plan on doing that to tack on some time at the start of the day for decorating. There's a small chance that I'll be able to get in the day before to decorate, but only if there isn't a Saturday wedding. Can I get some feedback on this potential timeline?

3-4: ceremony

4 - 5: Sip and Stroll (Cocktail hour — in a beautiful botanical garden!)

5 - 9: Reception with dinner

Is the 5 - 9 enough? Could I get away with 5 - 8? I want to make sure we're using our 8 hours efficiently for decorating and taking everything down, but I am most worried about making sure people feel like the celebration is worth the time on a Sunday evening. I'll have around 110 guests; most local, but we'll have several traveling within the state. I'm also trying to score a block with a cozy bed and breakfast right up the road for their convenience.

4 hours is a very typical reception length. You could get away with 3 hours, but the “party” portion of the reception is what would suffer.

4 hours allows time for a leisurely dinner, speeches (if you want them), first dance and parent dances (if you want them), and lots of general dancing/partying.

3 hours can happen, but it tends to feel rushed and the band/DJ usually have to announce that it's over.

    That timeline sounds great, honestly.

I think the timeline is great for a Sunday wedding! You could also get some feedback from your photographer - mine helped out a lot!

The weddings i've been to, most guests only want to stay and dance/hang out once dinner is over for an hour or so. If a large portion of your guests are partiers and will want to hang out for longer. If it's mostly family, not a lot of younger people, you can definitely get away with a shorter reception. I have an 8 hour limit too, including set up and tear down. It's tight but totally doable.
