Feel so guilty leaving pets for honeymoon...

Rebecca, on May 28, 2019 at 7:55 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 27

Hey friends!!

I AM MARRIED!!!!!!

My amazing HUSBAND booked the best honeymoon EVER. We leave next week. It is a 2 weeks cruise in Europe, so we are actually going to go a few days early and a stay a few days after to explore Europe a bit more. It will be SO fun and I am so excited to spend this time with my new husband... but I feel SO guilty leaving my cats. My two kitties are very dependent on me. They crave a lot of attention and always need to be right next to me. I am bringing them to my mothers house so that they are not alone all day long for 3 weeks, but I still feel so guilty. I can't get over the fear that they will think I abandoned them or they will hate me or not love me when we get back... am I crazy or did any other pet lover have similar fears? How did you cope? How did your fur babies react when you got back? Anything to ease my fears or ideas to make sure they know I'm coming back will be SO helpful to my sanity.

My fiancé and I just took a 4 day trip and I felt the same way. When we got home our pup still loved us and was super excited to see us. Your babies will be fine. Congrats and enjoy yourselves.

I have a very anxious cat that will eat my house akin to a dog if he's alone for too long.
I find the fact that my mother is there with him really helps. He's always very happy when I return.

We take a family vacation every year and I feel the same way every single time. I leave my pup with a trusted friend who stays at my house so that his routine is only interrupted minimally, but I still beat myself up over it. As much as I don't want to admit it, leaving him is probably harder for me than it is for him. Most pets are happy as long as they're getting attention, they don't care who it's from. Make sure your mom gives them extra affection and I'm sure they'll still be SO excited to see you when you return!

I feel the same way about leaving my kitties 😭 the only times I’ve been gone for a few days FH was still home with them. But when we go on our mini honeymoon in October that’ll be the first time they’re alone 😭 my mom or a friend will check in on them at least once a day but I’m still worried about how they’ll be. We want to take a longer 7-10 day honeymoon next year so our first trip might determine how that’ll go.

I’m literally dealing with the same fear! We have one cat, who thinks she’s a dog, and I’m genuinely concerned she’s going to be mad at us or she’s going to get so lonely. We’re either taking her to my moms or hiring a house sitter so she isn’t alone for so long. 😭

I travel few times a year for a week at a time. I leave my pup with a close friend, either at my place or at his apartment, which my pup is very used to. Every time I’m back, my pup is super happy & excited & as loving as before.
They will not remember! The most important thing is to leave them in a loving home with someone who will take a great care of them. Even though you’ll miss them, don’t worry about it too much & enjoy your honeymoon!

My parents leave kitty with a friend who's fur baby passed a bit ago. They travel quite a bit now that they are retired. I would take them if 1 of my 3 dogs wouldn't try to eat her the whole time.

Anyway... kitty usually acts all butt hurt and hides for about an hour or so when they get home from a trip but after that she is attached to my mom for days, laying all over her, following her from room to room...

We take our dogs to a doggy day care when we take trips. They get to stay in a room together at night and get to run around and play all day long with whatever dogs are there to be boarded or just there for daycare. They also have cameras all over the place so we can check in on them. Every time we look, they all seem to be living their best lives and when we get back to pick them up they are so excited and I usually spend a couple of nights buried under 180 lbs of dog lol.

I know its hard leaving them but its only temporary and when you get back, kitty will be so happy to have you home Smiley smile

Your mom will smother them with love & attention. Not to worry! After our wedding, my mom stayed at our house for a few days with our two kitties. They were fine. Due to our wedding (our stress, DIY projects everywhere, & house guests the week of), our girl kitty got several bladder infections the month of our wedding! 😞 After $1K of tests, it was stress. So your cats may appreciate a few weeks of a “no wedding stress” household. 🐱 ❤️

I'm assuming you haven't left them before? It's great they will be at your moms, I'm sure they will get plenty of attention! Do you have a friend or family member you can pay to come over for play time or snuggling? I've never had a cat, so I'm not sure what the "come walk my dog" cat equivalent is haha!

Aww I'm so sorry, I'm sad about leaving our kitties too Smiley sad luckily they are very bonded to my brother too so when we leave them with him and my mom while we're gone on our honeymoon, hopefully they won't miss us too much. It's great that you're sending them to your mom's house rather than boarding them somewhere, so they'll still get a lot of love! Maybe send them with some familiar toys from your house, and something that smells like you? My kitties have a favorite blanket that they both always curl up on, so that blanket will always stay with them and be comforting to them!

I feel the same way! We take short trips (2-3 days) to Atlanta all the time (my family is there), and I always hire this lady who comes twice a day to play with them for an hour and feed them, etc. My whole family and FH makes fun of me for this but I feel so bad leaving them alone! It'll be over a week for wedding/honeymoon, and my pups and kitties will be without us, I'm so worried and feel so guilty! The pups are SO attached to us too, UGH!

We have 2 dogs and will be gone for 3 weeks One dog is super friendly and adjusts pretty well to change but if we leave him home alone for a few hours he goes crazy when we come back crying like he hasn’t seen us in weeks and the other dog is an escape artist that can jump over 5 feet. will be leaving them at my moms place who has 2 other dogs she took 1 week off so she can pay attention to them and make sure they are adjusting i also have young sibling who are out of school and love playing with my dogs so I’m sure my dogs will have a blast.

We are doing a 2 week europe cruise with a few days in rome as well.... have two goldendoodles who are our world so definitely feeling the same anxiety about leaving them. But you just have to remember that this is your time, and they will be alive and well when you get back! Ours will spend a week at home with visits from our dog sitter, and then a week boarded at their doggy daycare- so lots of playing with friends. It will all work out!!

I understand your feelings 100%. On top of leaving our 12 year old daughter, we leave 2 dogs. My mom has made it easier by offering to stay at our house with them.

OMG I feel so bad for leaving my boys (2 dogs, 1 cat) during our honeymoon. But I know Gram and Pop (my parents) will take great care of them.

I just went to Europe for 2 weeks and had the same issue! I can’t tell you how many breakdowns I had leading up to us leaving about leaving my cat. Once I was gone it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I missed her every day but knew she was in good hands. We do have an automatic feeder and a Petcube so I was able to check on her and knew she was getting fed. My pet sitters gave us updates daily or every other day on her which was also reassuring Smiley smile I went a little over the top and typed out a “Caring for my cat” guide and left it with our pet sitters that included things to do/not to do, her day vet & emergency vet contact info, all her vaccines as well as an intensely with where we would be and when that way if we were traveling one day & would be on a flight & something happened they knew we couldn’t response and to do whatever they had to do. While it was extra work, I felt better in the long run knowing everything was written down for them if they did run into any issues and couldn’t get a hold of you! When we got home my cat was SO excited to see us she didn’t leave our side for the next few days. Have so much fun and don’t worry, they’ll be fine!

They should be fine as long as your mom will pay attention to them. They'll be thrilled when you get home. Facetime with them. I know it probably sounds stupid but why not?!
