Feeling to chubby to wedding dress shop

Anonymous, on October 4, 2013 at 9:27 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 31

Hi! I'm new to wedding wire this is my first post. Today I'm going wedding dress shopping and i'm dreading it. I'm normally a size 10-12 in dresses and I know that bridal dresses run much larger so they will have nothing my size and I'll feel so fat. Should I just put it off until I can lose weight?

I went shopping, and it was then I realized I was really unhappy with my weight and my body. I bought the dress (size 12), and joined Weight Watchers. I'm now down 25lbs. That was the reality check I needed.

Depending on the brand I wear a 6 or an 8. I'd like to lose another 5 lbs or so, but I can deal with where I am.

It actually depends on the silhouette and designer... I typically wear a 4 and found myself in 2 in most wedding dresses and had to order a 0 in the dress I ended up choosing.

In my opinion, try some on, just to get a feel of what you're looking at. Good luck Smiley smile

It also took my awhile to go dress shopping because I was afraid of how things may look. Your wedding is still a year away, maybe start working on yourself and wait to go until you feel more confident.

And don't focus so much on the dress size versus how you look in it!

I'm about a solid size ten right now. I felt much the way you do when I went dress shopping. And I took my Mom's advice "buy the dress that fits you now, that makes you feel fabulous now and adjust if necessary." So I did. If I don't lose a pound between where I am now and where I am working to be, that dress will look damn good. So shop for where you are and adjust it later if need be. Good luck and happy hunting!

Don't feel like that! I am a size 16 and 18 in wedding gowns and I've tried them on. Yes, it sort of sucked feeling like a stuffed sausage in some dresses but it has given me more motivation to get in shape for the wedding. Work your curves, girl!

In one dress I was a 10, in another I was a 6...they are all different. I agree with NusAG...it's about how you feel in the dress! No one will know the size, just how gorgeous you look in it. Plus if you're feeling a bit uncomfortable with your body, like Paris said, maybe it will give you the extra push to pick things up a bit. ENJOY YOUR DRESS SHOPPING!

Don't put it off. The wedding dress industry is ridiculous. I'm a size 12 and I had to order my dress in a size 15. Now, it has to be taken in because I'm losing weight.

That being said, wedding dresses are so beautiful! I loved trying them on. I fell in love with my dress and it flatters me, even in a larger size, so I'm super excited to see how good it will look now that I'm smaller.

I'm usually a 12 or a 14and tall and when I went to order my dress I needed a 16W for it to be long enough for me. I tried 14s I couldn't even zip and tried 14s that were huge. just depends on the designer and the style of the dress. Just go shop and see what's out there. You have plenty of time to worry about looking fabulous I'm it later.

I feel the same way, and I"m going shopping this weekend. I have been putting it off because I haven't lost enough weight (25 lbs so far!) but it's getting down to the wire. I'm tempted to buy one too small so it will motivate me to lose weight. But that may backfire.

    Good luck!

@hellothere don't do that! It can totally backfire! Happened to a friend. She had to crash diet (never good) and still didn't fit right. When you lose weight you may not lose it where you think you will.

Just buy what fits now. It is way easier to take a dress in than let it out.

Yep, I didn't focus on the size I went off how it looked on me.

Don't get caught up with numbers : )

Every wedding dress is different. I wear a 10 or a 12 too. (Okay, my ass is a 10 or a 12...my boobs and waist is like a 4 or 6) My wedding dress is a 10. I bought the SAMPLE. I need to loose a little bit or get it taken out so it falls right, but there was no problem getting it on or anything. I am sure you will find something beautiful that will not make you feel "chubby" which I'm sure you're not.

OMG, you're a 10-12. My future mother in law is a 10 and I think she's skinny and she looked FABULOUS in the dresses she tried on for mother-in-law gowns and she thought she was fat and had too much pooch.

There are some of us that are MUCH bigger than you. We all have body hang-ups.

Take the advice of Stacy and Clinton on What Not to Wear - the tag is just a damn number, it has no reflection on your body. You say yourself you KNOW that the wedding gowns run bigger than your normal size. It doesn't mean crap.

I'm a 16-18 and my gown happened to be a 14 because of the way it was cut.

I want to lose a good 20 pounds myself... I've gained some weight this summer and it's really been cutting down my self esteem a bit.

I haven't tried on dresses yet, but I'm not overly worried about it. Find some comfortable spanx to wear while trying dresses on, it might help you get a better feel of how you'll look when you lose a bit of weight. And if you don't lose any, you can wear the spanx on your big day! Smiley smile

Just keep thinking that wedding dress sizes are larger than normal dress sizes. I wear size 2 or even 0 a lot, and my wedding dress is a size 4. It was a perfect fit. So I think you just go a size up.

Here is my advice... don't even look at the size. it's just a number anyway. i'm a plus size bride and went to a shop that specializes in plus size wedding dresses. i felt so amazing in my dress when i tried it on and had never felt so beautiful. it's all about the attitude you have when going in.
