Fellow MOT's, any advice on what to use for Chuppah poles?

nancy, on September 8, 2015 at 10:31 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 7

I am building my own Chuppah (two weeks out, I know I am crazy) and need advice on what to use for Chuppah poles. They should be light but sturdy. Thanks!

My FH wants to use something like these bamboo poles if we can find them at a decent price:

I thought birch poles could look nice, too.

We used birch poles for ours. We ordered them online. They were pretty sturdy. Not sure what the shipping time is, but this is the site we used.

I think we're using birch as well- our florist has a frame already, and we are just tying tallitot for the top.

We used aspen branches - call local landscaping companies and see if they have some scraps, of if you know anyone in the business. Ours wasn't technically a chuppah, as I'm not practicing. but same thought.

Bamboo seems to be the popular choice in Israel but it depends on if you're planning on building a standing chuppah or the "traditional" kind that people hold.

Thanks everyone! I looked at the links for birch poles and while they would be able to get here in time, I called the company and they are 5-6 pounds each - which is not a huge deal, but holding that for 30 minutes straight is something I don't want to ask people to do. On to search out the bamboo.

FYI - I called a local florist and they have the bamboo poles for $3.00 each! That is much better than the online price ($8 with $150 shipping.) Next question - how do I attach the muslin fabric to the poles?
