fh Also Changing Name

Chantelle, on December 8, 2020 at 4:59 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

When we marry, I’d like my last name to be just Lozano. We would like his to be just Lozano as well (chop off the Chavez) so our last names will be exactly the same
What are the logistics of this? Does he need to change his last name first (before the wedding or marriage license, etc.) before I start working on changing mine? Or is this something that can be done together?
What resource or government entity do we need to reach out to to change his name?
I’m guessing once he changes his name, he would have to change it everywhere else (just like I would once my last name changes) correct?
Any advice or help is appreciated! Thanks!

I would check with your local court to see if he can do it by marriage or if he needs to first petition the courts for a name change because each states process varies.

But yes, once his is officially changed, he will then need to change it on everything as well.

My husband changed his name too! It was a fairly simple process where we live. He filled out a petition and paid the court fee. They scheduled him a court date, the judge approved it. He then went through the process that women typically go through (SS, dmv, etc). He changed his name 3 months before the wedding.
Some states the process can be longer. Some will let up change it in the marriage license. Check your county clerk they will direct you to the correct person/department.
    Good luck!

Oh him changing his name first made it easier for me. I just had to take the marriage certificate to the SS office. 😊

Hi Chantelle! Anyone can legally change their name to anything they'd like, but marriage is the easiest times to change your name because you don't need a court order!

You can do it at the same time (it doesn't matter what your spouse's last name is!), and would be easiest for both of you to do it after marriage with your marriage certificate! Just make sure to check if you need to provide your future married name on your marriage license - in some places you need to include that information on your marriage application.
