Finding a caterer

Olivia, on January 31, 2022 at 3:58 PM Posted in Planning 2 4

My fiance and I are getting married in 2023 in our friend's backyard. I have NO CLUE where to even start for catering or what the best choice would be.

Do we pick someone who cooks in the house kitchen, or someone who just delivers?

If anyone has had an intimate backyard/at home wedding please share with me what you did!

If you have a guest list any larger than maybe 20, it’s not likely the caterer is going to be able to prepare a meal on site in your home kitchen. I would choose someone who prepares the food in their kitchen and serves it at your venue, not just drops it off.

Different caterers have different set ups for this. We spoke to one who had a “kitchen truck” that was effectively a mobile kitchen where they could cook food onsite. Ours was a hybrid. They used our kitchen as well as setting up a “temporary kitchen”— which included an commercial oven delivered to the property! (We granted them access to our kitchen, otherwise they would have ordered additional equipment)

Both of these options (truck vs temp kitchen) were an additional expense. So, a drop off/delivery meal would likely be cheaper, but hot fresh food cooked onsite was a priority to us.

Hi - I am planning a backyard wedding for about 60 right now. I have a caterer that will bring the food and food warmers for the event - they will also drop off fresh food an hour into the event. The caterers will serve the food and clear the tables. I will have them using the kitchen to warm up apps - but besides that - they will prepare all off site at there location.
