Finishing the diy invitations this weekend (letterpress, embossing, Cameo..)

Ashleigh, on December 27, 2018 at 12:24 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 3 18

Hi All! I LOVE letterpress but my wallet doesn't so I DIYd our letterpress invitations. It wasn't dirt cheap, but definitely 1/4 of what it would've cost to purchase them. It was also cheaper because I collect craft supplies LOL. I've had the L Letterpress machine for about 5 years and it's definitely gotten a workout over the last few weeks!

As you can see I've taken over my parent's dinning room table-- fun times for Christmas dinner!

DETAILS!!

I designed the letterpress plate in Adobe InDesign and then had it printed at Boxcar Press. I also purchased the ink from Boxcar, which is the most expensive purchase of this whole project! The A7 and 4Bar cards are from Holyoke Paper and the envelopes are from LCI Paper. I'm extra so I decided to emboss the return address Smiley sexy The stamp was purchased from Etsy.

The invitations aren't finished yet, I need to add our names and monogram, which will also be embossed in gold. I'll post photos of those once I finish!

I also have a Silhouette Cameo in my stash (collector of craft supplies here!) I have horrible hand writing so I used the Cameo to address the outer envelope with gold gelly roll pens. The names are the only thing in the fancy lettering, the address is in a sans serif plane Jane typeface so no issues with USPS.

TIME/COST

Out of pocket, 100 invites have cost me roughly $250. But again, that's because I had the letterpress platform and Cameo to begin with. Everything else was purchased on sale (mostly Black Friday).

It was a rocky start with the letterpress at first because I was using too much ink. Once I got the hang I was able to knock the invites and response cards out in a day.

Has anyone else use a Cameo or Cricut to address envelopes? It takes a little time but I think I'm going to try and put two envelopes per run and keep my fingers crossed that it won't smear.

    I. AM. SO. JEALOUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! I wanted dark envelopes sooooo badly but I got frustrated and gave up. Plus the cost for everything I wanted was around $1,500 for 125 invitations so you rocked the costs! These look absolutely amazing and I'm so impressed!

Will you still need to get them hand cancelled b/c of the dark envelope color?

    Thanks ladies! Smiley heart

I am definitely going to ask about the hand cancelling. There's a small post office across from my job and it's never busy in there so we shall see!

THANK YOU ladies!! I went into this whole planning process thinking the entire wedding would be DIY but my mother has been the voice of reason and actually forcing me to buy things instead of trying to do everything myself!

I finished the invitations yesterday evening and what a relief it is! Now we just have to bundle and send Smiley shame

Beautiful work! What font did you use for the names on your envelopes you mailed? Any other tips from a pro?

Thank you! I will have to check when I get home on the font I used and let you know!

If you're going to letterpress yourself, it really is worth getting high quality ink and you only need a teeny bit. It is going to feel like you need to use a ton, but don't!

The Cameo was a lifesaver and pretty straight forward. Once you figure out your spacing, save it as a template!

Thank you Ashleigh! I have a Cameo as well, and plan to use it for addressing the envelopes. So many great fonts, but I would like one that does not depend on "fill"....like Magnolia Sky does. Your font is perfect!

Am just now experimenting with gel pens vs. ultra fine sharpies on the Cameo. I have only used it for vinyl....whole new world! I have a heat gun for embossing, so reading your post was so inspiring!

Sorry for the delay we have been moving and things got a little crazy!

The script font was Everything Calligraphy; the other font was KB Sketch. I used the sakura gelly roll pens and the regular plastic silhouette pen holders without any issue. I bought the Amy Chomas marker holder because of reviews online and I also was thinking of using the sharpies but decided against it.
