Fired 38 days before the wedding

From Mi to Mo, on April 16, 2015 at 11:45 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 23

So I am a nanny, my choice of work. I love it, I love children. I am a child development major. Monday I went to work and started not feeling well, as I was around sick children at a family get together over the weekend (I did still work 11 hours). Tuesday my boss told me to stay home so her kids didn't get sick. Well, yesterday I got a text message from her saying she no longer needed a nanny because she enrolled her 2 boys into full-time day care.

I hated my job but it was the only one I had. And I hated it because of the way the boys and the parents treated me. Getting death threats from a 4 y/o isn't fun, especially when the parents just tell me to be patient and that he is going through a difficult change from age 4 to age 5. Ugh! But now, with so many wedding expenses left, I have no job. And FH and I were only getting help from his parents to pay for the food...everything else we are paying for.

I just feel very overwhelmed now and idk what to do. :/

If you still enjoy working with kids, look at daycares. I worked at one for 3 years and I LOVED the kids!! Sure, the pay wasn't great and I had to deal with people I didn't like sometimes, but the kids made up for it Smiley smile

ETA: I am a substitute teacher now. I am making $100 when I have a sub job. I only get about 2-3 a week though :/

I'm so sorry. :-( That seems to be going around today; I saw a post that someone's FH lost his job.

If it makes you feel better, if her 4-year-old is threatening to kill people, he'll get thrown out of daycare soon enough.

I'm so sorry that happened? Do you anticipate it being hard to find another gig? If it was me, I would apply at the most happening restaurant in town and get every shift I could. Restaurant jobs can be easier to get and the tips at a busy place can be quite worth it.

Can you substitute teach? I was a sub for a while and you make decent money.

I'm sorry this happened but I agree with Tania, could totally be a blessing in disguise. Have you tried local day cares? Or such as she suggested. Good luck hun!

So sorry to hear this but it also sounds like this could be good to get you out of that situation. Just apply like crazy to other places and hope you find something asap.

I am so sorry to hear this. it's overwhelming to lose one's job even when one isn't in the midst of planning the biggest event of their life. Keep your chin up, and remember to breathe.

Care dot com and sitter city dot com. Both are free for providers and they have tons of jobs and you get to pick and choose which one(s) you apply for. Can you get a written letter of recommendation from her, and ask her if she would be willing to be a reference, as well.

LoL those parents are going to be in for a shock. A daycare is not going to put up with precious little Timmy making death threats... 4/5 year olds are held accountable for their actions in daycares.

Sorry for your situation though. Did you have a contract signed? In the future, I would sign a contract saying that you both have to give each other 2 weeks notice.

It took me 4 months to finally get a response from anyone on care.com, and another month to finally get this job (also from care.com). I wish I could work at a daycare but I can't. All the ones where I live require at least 12 units in Child Development and after this semester I will have 9. In the fall I should be able to start working at a daycare, though! I am grateful to have had the job but I am also happy that I no longer have to deal with that. One day the 4 y/o told me "I'm going to kill you with a real gun" because I didn't want to push him on the swing as soon as we got to the park. It was insane! I am going to look for another job, though! Thanks for the encouragement ladies Smiley smile

This really stinks. But honestly, it sounds like a toxic family, and you can do better.

Care.com is great, but parents have to pay to contact you, so usually they give up. Honestly, I got my last nanny job through Craigslist (responded to their add, not posting). Might be worth looking to see if there is anything. Also, care.com tip: if you respond to parents, include your email, but not directly, so instead of ******@*****.*** type it as mitomo at gmail (care.com edits out traditional email format). Smart parents will get the hint and you might get more contacts because they don't have to pay ridiculous fees just to respond!

I know it doesn't help with the money situation, but it's a blessing in disguise! You can focus on your last details and relax some. Try to think of it that way and keep your chin up. One door closes, another one opens. :-)

Oh my! I'm a nanny in my area (my undergrad & grad degree are in education). It's SOOO key to have a good fit all around (parents, children, child care provider) I had some crappy situations before I found the family I'm currently with- && they are AMAZING. Really hope you can find a good family- word of mouth was the BEST way for me! Hopefully you can find a positive environment or maybe some extra evening babysitting.

I feel your pain. I wasn't fired but had to quit my job 2 weeks after my wedding due to a hand injury. I am having a difficult time finding a job that I can actually work at with a hand injury. It sucks considering I need to pay bills. Ughh!! I hope you find something. Look at it as a blessing. That kid sounds like a monster!
