Firing a Stylist

Kathleen, on July 9, 2019 at 7:06 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 4
So, I just had to fire my hair stylist for my wedding in August and she took it really badly. She’s a friend of a friend and I thought she was nice but my hair trial went really badly a few weeks ago... like I showed her photos of what I would like and she completely did not execute the style I wanted. I even felt like she didn’t know what she was doing at one point... I got home and realized I could have done the style myself. When I said something about tweaking the style/doing another a trial, she was very rude about it. I immediately had red flags because I don’t want to have to worry about my hair on my wedding day and it worried me that she couldn’t take suggestions from me. So I looked into booking someone else and I found a new stylist that seems great and even gave me a better deal with my bridesmaids hair too. But when I told the original stylist I was “going in another direction,” she flipped out. Like a lot. She said the whole thing was my fault and cussed me out. She’s just starting out and didn’t have me sign a contract or put down a deposit (I know, red flag there) but my trial was $50 and I offered to pay her for her time when I canceled... but after getting cussed out, I’m certainly not doing that. We’re still more than a month out from the wedding date and she works at a busy salon, I’m sure she can find other clients. I just really don’t understand how someone could be so unprofessional. Thoughts?

Well, it seems like you've answered your own question. She acted this way because she is unprofessional. It's unfortunate for sure, but it's not like her whole career was hanging on this wedding gig, right? Most people in the service business know this is all a part of doing business, and don't take it personally. If she works at a salon, she'll be just fine. You did the right thing. Why should you hire someone to do your wedding hair, when you were completely unhappy with the work they did in the trial? You shouldn't! And don't feel badly about it, either. This is clearly her problem. You handled it in a professional way, and she freaked out on you. Nobody could have expected that--not from a professional.

It's ok. You'll find someone much more suited for the job, who will do what you want. Good luck.

It sounds like your gut reaction helped you dodge a bullet. That kind of response is extremely unprofessional. If you paid for the trial already, I don’t see the need in paying her anything extra. If you haven’t, just pay the $50 for the trial.

Unprofessionalism kills me! I'd post screencaps of the conversations in a review, personally, to help future brides avoid this! But this would likely just add extra stress and drama for you.
Just be glad you dodged the bullet now!
