Firing Long-time Hairstylist from Wedding

Leanne, on May 20, 2020 at 10:16 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 6
I should preface this post by saying, I already know I’m going to talk to her, and nothing super dramatic has happened.

I’ve had the same girl doing my color for seven years. She is excellent at color, but has never done my hair for special occasion. Back in March I had my bridal portraits, and I paid her to do my hair (long down in waves a little teasing at the crown for my veil, nothing too difficult). To be honest, I had done a very similar hairstyle on my self for a gala a couple weekends before that.
The hair was fine for portraits, but it’s not at all what I wanted for the actual day. It’s such a simple look that I’m going for, but I’m very particular about frizziness, wave pattern, smoothness, etc. I probably sound neurotic, but I have very very long blonde hair so it is kind of a stand out feature of my overall look. So I am being very particular.
I have a color appointment with her in a couple weeks, and I will probably just tell her since we have postpone the wedding and it has a later start time, I plan on just doing my own hair for myself and my sister.
Any advice or similar experiences you guys can share? I feel really bad, but I also don’t at the same time since it’s my day and I don’t feel like special occasion hair is her strong suit.

I think that’s reasonable, some hairstylists are better in certain areas than others. It’ll probably save you lots of money too.

I feel the same way too. I am worried the venue’s hair stylist aren’t good enough to me. Looking at the venue’s pictures, al the bride has an okay hair, nothing special, but I am too peculiar for my big day. I want it special 🤣 Nothing wrong with that, op! We should expect to look special on our special day 🥂

It's your day, and as long as you're polite, there really shouldn't be a problem. It's nice of you to care, but I wouldn't worry too much!

Telling her you will take care of the day yourself is fine. You do not owe her any explanation. Lots of people do their own hair, or have a friend do it. Tell her you are happy she is a great colorist. With that taken care of the styling wedding day will be easy for you. You employ your hairstylist. Your hair stylist does not have any right or guarantee to always do your hair. If you make a big deal out of it, THAT would make her feel she must have done something wrong, and be unkind. Keep it simple.

Did you already hire her for the wedding? If not, no need to say anything unless she asks.
