First Dance - do you practice or just wing it?

Kimberly, on July 27, 2020 at 5:10 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 43

I was talking to my fiance about our First Dance this weekend and I'm slightly embarrassed I haven't really given it much thought until now about we're about 32 days out, OMG.

Did/are you guys practicing a choreographed dance if you're doing a slow dance? I know for those fun dances it's probably a given that you would need to practice. My fiance and I are doing to do a slow dance and he wants to wing it. Do we need to practice? I'm sure if we bust into something fun I have no problem in just going with it but kind of want to have an input from you ladies on what you all are doing or what you did or wish you had done. I'm pretty Type A so even though I CAN do something spontaneous; it's more in my nature to have something planned ahead. Smiley heart

We’re not planning on practicing anything special, but my FH and I met while out dancing. I think if you don’t dance together often and are wanting to do anything other than just sway, maybe do a couple practice sessions. There’s tons of YouTube videos you can watch if you want to go this route.

Thank you for that! I think we will look at some stuff this weekend as we're both pretty good dancers on our own but not sure how well together except when we just dance around the house for fun

You can do anything you want. Most couples tend to wing it and sway back and forth. Nothing wrong with that.

My fiance and I took dance lessons because I am not a dancer, lol! I did not want to do a fully choreographed dance, though we learned dance moves that we could use in our first dance. We sometimes practice our dancing at home, but now that we've postponed to 2022, we've got plenty of time to perfect it! We were surprised at how much fun we had taking dance lessons together, we looked at it as a date night. If you don't want a fully choreographed dance, I recommend maybe a lesson or two, or look on YouTube!

Thanks! We originally were planning on doing that with some added stuff as we go along I just wasn't sure if that would be too basic

How'd you guys do? As good as expected right? I figured there really wouldn't be nothing to it if it's a slow dance and not a choreographed dance

We didn’t really practice. We did a slow dance & if we heard song come on while we were at the house we would start dancing & kind of joke around. But we pretty much winged it and it was fine.

Considering that I’m so bad of a dancer that I have three left feet instead of two I think we did pretty good ha ha.

Daughter and SIL were together for 8 yrs before the wedding, including going to almost all of their HS dances together and then enough weddings and other events that they definitely had plenty of practice dancing together -- nothing "choreographed," but more than just swaying. The night before the wedding, they did practice dancing to their wedding song so they could think about when they wanted to do some spins, etc., that fit with the music. It was a quick 15 minutes at the most, but they looked comfortable and natural on the dance floor at the wedding and it looks good in their video.

Aww that's a great idea! I think that's the key is to do some moves and spins that fit the music so it would APPEAR choreographed but they probably just had a ton of fun

We’re just doing a standard slow dance for about one minute of the song. Definitely not doing anything choreographed.

We’re not doing anything special, and I’m actually trying to convince my fiancé that we shouldn’t do it at all. lol

Our photographer told us that we should practice and film it if possible to get comfortable, even though it would just be a basic slow dance. She said that they can look super awkward if you aren’t careful. I’ve definitely seen some awkward ones myself, so it makes sense to me.

We are not doing choreography with our first dance. We did, however, do a virtual class that did basics of country music dancing, but would look good with most of not all songs. Hunter Master's Date Night Dancing. It was fun and it's all on YouTube.

That’s actually good advice! I have a video from last Christmas of my fiancé and I just dancing and spinning and we looked stiff in some parts. Are you guys still deciding to do it or not?
