First Dance Help!

Miranda, on June 7, 2024 at 11:53 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 1

My Fiancé and I are going to have our first dance to Heather on the Hill by Nathan Evans. We wanted something fun and up beat, but neither of us are very good dancers. Does anyone have any advice to dancing to a song like this? We don't really want to choreography too much but I want to have a little bit of a plan lol. Heather on the Hill- Nathan Evans

I would say now is the perfect time to begin taking dance classes and speak to your dance instructor about your desire to not have the dance appear to be too choreographed. Most instructors will oblige and give you some step sequences to consider.

When it comes to first dances, unless you are professional dancers, or already have dancing as a frequent hobby, you really don't want to "wing" it. Some of the reasons for this is that it is more difficult to maneuver in a wedding dress, and it is a moment that will be in several pictures, and filmed closely.

Another suggestion I might have is that you can have an "unchoreographed" feel to your song if you hire a fiddle player, or a fiddle player and a soloist singer that can slow, "Heather on the Hill" juuuuuuuussssttt enough that it makes sense to do a more improvised "side to side" slow dance.

    For example:

My husband and I had the same desire to not appear choreographed for the first dances, and relayed our wished to our dance instructors. (Can we agree that the overly choreographed dips are a bit cringy, or am I the only one?) The lessons were not only beneficial for the two of us, they came in handy for the father-daughter dance, and the dance that he shared with this aunt.
