First Dance Nerves?

JulyPittsburghBride, on July 1, 2016 at 7:44 AM Posted in Planning 0 20

We finally have our entire first dance choreographed. We're okay, but not amazing. It was really important to us both to have an awesome first dance. Was anyone else nervous? Did all go okay? Can most folks even tell if not? I think part of my fear is that he'll step on my dress and rip it, or we'll get tangled up and fall during the grapevine or dip. ETA: Due to constant foot problems and plantar fasciitis, I'll be in sneakers. No one will be able to see them under my gown, but they definitely don't slide like a good pair of dance shoes.

Ha! Our first dance will look like an awkward middle school rocking back and forth dance. Don't be nervous, enjoy it@

Our first dance was the only thing about which DH was nervous - because he/we didn't practice as much as we should have (I had hoped he'd know it well enough to just have fun with it and not look like he was concentrating so much). It turned out fine and the crowd seemed to love it. We should have video of the whole thing (though probably not all edited like our highlights video) shortly (when videographers back in town), but several people have requested it :p. It'll probably make me appreciate the awesome edits of the first dance portions of our highlights video (link on my BAM).

I was actually the one stepping on my own dress the entire time - that's the thing about not being able to have a dress rehearsal. He was off on a couple of things, but as you suggested, I don't think anyone noticed since it's not like they knew the choreography or we had to match anyone else.

Here's a pic of us grapevining for kicks. Just try to have fun with it and enjoy!

We practiced our waltz til I heard 1-2-3, 1-2-3 in my head. Joe was soooooooooo serious about it and I started laughing.

    It will be great--enjoy!

Just enjoy it! No one will notice if you improvise for a part of it.

I'm with @Stacy. Our first dance is going to be rocking/swaying because FH doesn't like to dance. I'm sure your first dance will be great! Think of it like theater. The only person that knows a mistake was made is the person who made the mistake (and the director, or in your case the choreographer), as long as you don't make a face and make it obvious. Don't worry about nerves, just be in the moment and enjoy your first dance as husband and wife. It'll be lovely!

Just enjoy. We've been practicing by getting drunk and dancing in our living room.

We're kind of just winging it. We've been practicing in our living room and when we go out but we're not having anything choreographed. FH would die if I suggested that.

Do you have a floor-length skirt you can practice in so you guys can learn how to avoid your dress maybe?

We were nervous too. We had like 3 months of private dance classes before ours, and our dance teacher suggested we spend at least an hour every day practicing the week leading up to it. She said that our goal should be to run through the dance smoothly 3 times.

We couldn't devote an hour every day that week because we were running around but we definitely did practice.

Did we mess up a little? Yes. If you ask DH he'll say no. But we just had soo much fun with it and our guests were so excited about it that it doesn't even matter, and honestly I'm sure I'm the only one that can remember the exact place where we "messed up". If I'm really 100% honest, the only reason we messed up was because DH missed a step and instead of just going with it, I tried to lead him into it. Which if I hadn't don't that he would have gotten us there on his own!

So, relax, have a glass of champagne (or 2) before you go out there and HAVE FUN! Smile, Enjoy yourself, and don't worry about it. The more you worry about messing up more it will show on your face and bring attention to if it you do.

I actually ended up getting a second dress to change into when I realized there was no way he wasn't going to step on my dress. But depending on the kind of dance you do you might be fine!

We did: Slow, Salsa, Hustle and back to slow.

    Here's us during our Salsa

In our last two weeks, our instructor told us to practice one time every day and don't worry about how it goes. We had to practice in our living room which is much smaller than the dance floor. It was funny but I was so nervous about how it would translate to the real dance.

On our wedding day, we both tripped on my dress and we both cracked up laughing the whole time. Everyone was impressed that we had learned a dance even with the tripping, and our pictures look great because of how we're laughing instead of looking nervous.

You are the best. All of you. Thank you! @Jade, that's totally what I'm doing, trying to lead him when he messes up. And he takes this SO SERIOUSLY. :-)

Ours was also just a hold-and-sway sort of thing. Haha my concern was just that people would be bored, which they probably were, but whatever. You'll be great!

Wow everyone else's dances are making me feel so lame! We will also be doing the boring middle school rocking back and forth and swaying kind of thing. I'm having our DJ invite other people onto the floor shortly into our dance to prevent everyone from falling asleep. FH is so outgoing and loves dancing while I'm the total opposite. I'm fully counting on him trying to be silly and start doing something ridiculous while I stand there awkwardly laughing lol

@eks, I'm sure that will still work just fine! We just wanted to be a little bit different. Is there any way you'd be interested in a few lessons? Arthur Murray and such places are crazy, but we have an awesome studio that can teach everything you need in a few lessons for a really reasonable price. (Of course, more lessons also is great.) YOU still have time, and it's GREAT exercise and great team building as a couple.

Hi Date twin! We were nervous about it, so we thought we would practice dancing about a week and a 1/2 ago. Turns out that dancing in heels on carpet is a terrible idea and I rolled my ankle so bad that I'm now wearing a brace boot until it's healed. Now I'll just be happy if I can wear my heels at the wedding!

It's okay, stuff happens. It's helped me to remember to not freak out too much about anything else for the next 15 days though!
