First dance song- recording vs. band

twostep127, on May 5, 2016 at 10:22 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 4

FH and I are torn about our first dance. The song we've chosen is "Crush" by the Dave Matthews Band (hence my username, any other fans here?), and we were planning on using a recording until we met with the bandleader yesterday. He told us that playing it would be no problem and played us some recordings of them covering DMB songs, which were all really good. I have no doubt that their version would be great- our band is one of our biggest expenses, and they are absolutely incredible live- but FH is having trouble letting go of the authentic Dave version.

Anyone else who is having a band encountering this issue? What did you decide? Or what would you prefer as a guest? On one hand it seems silly to "waste" the expensive band for the most important dance of the night and the recording might pale in comparison to the live entrance songs, but the authentic version does have sentimental value to us since we've seen DMB in concert so many times together.

We have a band for our Reception as well and we decided to use a recording instead of the band. Only because we absolutely fell in love with Haley Reinhart's version of Can't help falling in Love. I didn't feel it would be the same.

Yes! We hired a band as well and have the same problem. Our band leader person said that it was completely normal fine to use the recording for some songs, because you really just can't recreate some songs. For example, I'm dancing to The Gambler by Kenny Rogers w/ my brothers in place of my father because it was his favorite song, and we're going to use the recording because it's so hard to recreate.

I think you should go with the recording for your DMB song (LOVE that song). I think it'll be so special listening to the familiar track, and I don't think you're wasting the band at all.

I've gone back and forth about this several times (and probably will many more times in the next 8 months), but I think as long as our band can play our song we'll go with the band. I agree about it feeling like wasting the band if we just play the recording, but them I'm like well what if they can't capture everything we love about the song?

I think you should use the recording as it has the most meaning to you guys as a couple. It's not just the song, it's the DMB experiences you guys will be remembering too. It won't be a waste of the band, I'm sure they'll get plenty of playing time outside of this one song!
