First Dance Songs Do they have to be slow?

RhnCasi419, on October 24, 2014 at 7:12 AM Posted in Planning 0 12

Music is important to me, so yeah, I am already starting to think about songs a little less than a year out. Currently, (this could change, haha), I am thinking about an old George Harrison (from the Beatles) song "What is Life" - the lyrics are awesome and beautiful and appropriate, but the song is a little upbeat, definitely not slow. FH and I are planning on taking dance lessons. Wondering if a first dance song with some tempo would be weird or awkward. By nature, both of us are fast people - we move fast. http://youtu.be/8eEQ4J6Lnrs

I think you should do what works for you. There is no hard and fast rule about the first dance. Do what you and FH will be inspired by the most.

FH wants to use "Thing Called Love" for our first dance. I am on the fence because its a rock song, but at the same time, it totally inspires us.

My only recommendation is to practice dancing to it. If you are taking dancing lessons, bring this song to try out, but also bring a back-up slower song to try if that one doesn't work. I agree with Margaret that there are no rules as far as what you dance to, as long as you feel comfortable dancing to it.

Another alternative, also, is to use it somewhere else in your ceremony. My favorite love song is "Anything for You" by Ludo, which does not have a dancing beat to it at all. Rather than try and figure out a way to dance to it, I'm going to use that song during the cake cutting. Just a thought for if you decide your first choice song won't work for a first dance. Smiley smile

You can dance to whatever you want to. Slow, fast, anything in between. But just practice dancing to it. If you're wanting to take dance lessons, bring your song choice (or a few options) to your dance instructor and he/she will be able to help plan something that will work Smiley smile

I'd say it's up to you and your FH!

and laughing, because I just asked my DJ yesterday if the LAST dance is supposed to be slow. (is it?)

My husband and I danced to "the story" which gets pretty upbeat. We didn't practice and it was perfect Smiley smile

Whatever makes YOU happy. Our's is "Till My Last Day" by Justin Moore.. not too fast, but still upbeat and happy! Smiley smile I would say practice if you and your FH don't dance together normally though.

I think the first song should be whatever you guys are comfortable dancing to. Whether it's slow or fast.

Ours is "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz. The original acoustic version. At first, I wanted to pick something more "our there" because I hear this one on the radio a million times now and I feel like everyone knows it... but that's our song, and so that's what it will be Smiley smile The tempo isn't all that fast, but the feel of the song is a little more upbeat.
