First dress fitting - need advice!

Kasey, on April 26, 2022 at 11:44 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

Hello all! Yesterday was my first dress fitting and I was having a hard time articulating to the tailor what was bothering me about my dress so they could make the appropriate alterations. The picture on the left is the sample dress I tried on last May, the picture on the right is from yesterday. The picture on the right (my dress) is one size larger than the sample dress in the picture on the left but my dress is pinned back to show how it will look after alterations. From the belly up, I feel the sample dress fit me perfectly and how I want my dress to fit. I feel like my dress is way less flattering. It doesn't help that my mom said my stomach sticks out, so I'm very self conscious of that area and feel like that seam is extenuating it. I don't even notice it on the sample dress. I showed these pictures to the tailor and he didn't seem to know what I was talking about. I am going back tomorrow before they start alterations, and wondering if you have advice on how to explain this or do you think I should just try talking to a different tailor. OR am I just being hypercritical of myself? Thank you!!

Consider suggesting shortening the straps to move that seam up a bit. My dress also looked strange up top when I got it, and shortening the straps made everything fall much better.

I think the lighting in the second picture is creating a lot of shadows that are accentuating the fact that your dress is clipped (not actually altered yet) and ironed.
I don’t think it looks like your belly sticks out in the second picture—having the extra size’s space in the hips makes it fit much better than the sample dress. It’s going to turn out great!

If your tailor said they don't see what you're talking about, I think that's kind of a red flag. I would get another opinion. They should be the experts on this kind of stuff, right?

I also agree that shortening the straps will give the desired effect. It shoudn't be too hard of a fix. I know how you feel though; I just picked up my dress a couple of weeks ago and liked how the sample looked waaaay better. I'm so anxious to get alterations started and feel more confident in my dress!

It looks to me like the middle area between the V and the seam across is longer than the sample? So it looks like the waist sits lower to me. That could be part of what you're noticing

The picture on the right actually makes your stomach less visible than the smaller sample dress. The seam would catch the light a lot less if it was slightly higher so perhaps the suggestion of shortening the straps will resolve your issue.

Alterations are super stressful but try not to panic or get discouraged. Especially try to ignore your mother's comments about your body. 🙄 You look beautiful but I know it is hard to see that when all you are focusing on is the things you want fixed.

I agree! When I first looked at your photos, the one on the right looks more flattering and shows less accentuation of your belly. I hope that helps! 😊

Thank you so much for your response! The tailor said he didn't want to shorten the straps because they would dig into my shoulders, and I just took his word for it. However, I went back yesterday and asked them to clip up the straps and it already looked so much better, so they will shorten the straps.

Thank you for saying this. I was starting to feel like I was being too picky. I agree, they should be the experts and know how the dress should fit. I went back yesterday and they will shorten the straps. Once they were pinned up, the dress already looked better before alterations. Fingers crossed.

I think your dress looks lovely and it’s nothing that Spanx and a corset can’t handle. I’m so sorry that your mom made you feel bad they have a way of doing that sometimes.
