Fish at the reception

Jennifer, on February 24, 2019 at 8:16 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14
So we went to our tasting and it was wonderful. The food was perfect and presented well. We are picking a buffet style with 3 meat options. We will have a beef carving station, chicken and then we were thinking fish for the 3rd. My fiance really likes fish, I don't so I'm doing it more for him. But don't really have an opinion. Now my fmil said no because not enough people will want or take the fish. Also my moh said it'll make the reception smell fishy now I don't know what to do...help any one have advice on having fish??

Fish is a very general term. What kind of seafood are you thinking of serving? Salmon is a very popular wedding option and I don't think it's going to make your reception smell "fishy." Remember, this is your and your FH's wedding, not your MOH's or FMIL's.

Thanks for the advise. We tried a tilapia but think maybe going with the salmon. That's what I told future hubby. If he wants fish he can have fish. It was just like a switch with him he was all for it and then as soon as his mom said no he changed his mind. But I think we are gonna have fish. Cause it's our wedding and he should have what he wants.

It probably depends on your family. We had the exact same meats at our wedding. A lot of people took the fish too. It shouldn't turn the space "fishy" smell.

If you go with a fish, I would choose salmon. It tends to not have much of a fishy smell in comparison to other types of fish. And it delicious!

I hate fish but we will have it as an option. I feel like every wedding I have ever been to has a fish option and it doesn’t smell

As a vegetarian, I would not appreciate or eat fish. I would assume there would be true vegetarian options.

Yeah, having a fish entree won’t make the place smell fishy, your MOH is not thinking straight on that one. Restaurants that serve fish on the menu don’t smell “fishy” either.

I’m a coordinator at an event center and salmon is one of our most popular options. It never smells fishy

Fish shouldn’t make a reception stink. It’s a pretty popular option. We had fillet steak and swordfish for our buffet, and tons of people went for the fish (or some of each!). There was nothing smelly about it.

I never have been to a wedding with fish that smelled up the room! That's nonsense haha. Have fish because your FH wants it! We will more than likely have a chicken and salmon option. I think plenty of people like fish so long as it's appealing! And based on your food pictures I am sure it will look and taste great!

I've been to weddings that served fish, and never noticed a bad smell. Usually a super fishy smell is a bad sign anyway, but normal fish cooked correctly won't smell like that. Does your caterer plan for every person to take each protein? You could always just tell them to plan on fish for 20% and more for chicken & beef. I'd take fish at a wedding depending on the type and cook.

I don't eat any kind of fish, but my husband loves it. So for our wedding, we had filet mignon and salmon as the choices. They were all cooked right there in an open kitchen right off the dining room and there was not even a hint of fishy smell. I have a very sensitive nose and would have noticed right away.

I think you should do whatever makes you and your FH happy. Good luck!

We are also doing a buffet, with a roast beef carving station and chicken breast! As our third "meat" option, we are going with shrimp fettucine alfredo- thinking the sauce will mask any fishy smell and it provides a seafood option! Our caterer also gave us a better deal this way than having just a seafood dish too, because it's a "starch side" with shrimp added to it.
