Fitness in the midst of covid

Lea, on May 5, 2020 at 7:38 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 10

I bought my dress back in January and it fit perfectly-really no need for alterations, just a few repair things (I bought it second hand) that my mom is going to take care of for me.
However, I know that I've gained weight since I bought my dress. Even before COVID hit, I had gained a little weight due to stress, but I've definitely gained more since the pandemic started. I'm a teacher, so with being on my feet all day at work, and then exercising on top of that, I was maintaining a pretty active lifestyle pre-stay at home order. Plus, not being a morning person, I didn't typically eat much breakfast and I would always eat a salad from the cafeteria salad bar for lunch.

Working from home, it's been really hard to continue to be active. I'm supposed to be on my computer checking emails, grading, working on lesson plans, or teaching from 8-3, which consists of a lot of sitting. I get up at least every hour and walk around the house some, but it's not the same as being on my feet teaching all day. I'm still exercising around 30 minutes a day, but with a higher calorie intake (I'm actually eating breakfast and more of a lunch because I have time/not distracted from being hungry...plus quarantine snacking, if I'm being honest) and less activity, I've gained probably about 10 pounds since I bought my dress.

My wedding is June 27th, and although we're doing a small ceremony this year and the big celebration next year due to COVID, I want to wear my dress this year because it's perfect and we're taking our photos this year. I'm terrified I'm not going to fit in it anymore. I haven't tried it on since mid February, and even then it was a little tight getting the buttons done.

Any tips for keeping up fitness and weight loss while working from home? What has worked for you? Sorry for the long post-just thought I needed to give context of what was normal before, and what I'm doing now.

I’m a teacher too and I gained weight at first from being off my feet. I do squats and other body weight exercises, and walk around my apt complex for an hour every day. I got back to my pre-quarantine weight mainly by eating less during the day. I don’t need as many calories because I’m not spending the energy.

I’ve been doing Chloe Ting’s workouts! They’re free on YouTube and she has entire schedules for you to follow so you don’t have to guess what to do. They focus a lot on toning and losing inches. There are tons of great before and after videos she does on her channel as well. Eating healthy along with exercising will be sure to get you back to where you want to be!

I did lose 8 pounds in 2 months by not eating bfast and fasted until 2-3 pm, then eat a regular lunch portion, dinner at 7-8pm, exercise every other day, no sugar, no milk product, less carbs.

I'm a quarantined teacher struggling with the same thing ): I've made it a point to go for a 30 minute walk in the morning before I start my school tasks, and another at least 30 minute walk in the evening when I'm done. I also try to fit in a 30 minute workout after I'm done with school things or during my "lunch/recess" break.

I, too, have found myself snacking a lot more since I am not running around all day. I've tried to stick with low calorie, high portion size snacks such as white cheddar smart food popcorn or fruit, and I've made it a point to S-L-O-W down while eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I think teachers don't realize just how quickly we stuff our face when trying to eat quickly at school, make those last minute copies, and finally use the bathroom (: This has worked well for me so far! Some days are better than others, but hey, we are doing the best we can!

I’ve been intrigued by intermittent fasting, but I feel like I get so hangry 😂. How do you last until 2pm?!?

Ugh I feel the eating too fast so much. FH keeps reminding me that we don’t have a food shortage😂😂
I’ve definitely been increasing my fruit intake the last week, and I feel like that’s been helping.

The hunger comes and goes gradually. Once I passed the hunger peak, I starting to feel okay. I can continue until 4-5pm if I allow myself, but I won’t be eating enough at dinner time if I ate that late. I meditate or read a book or listen to calm music to avoid hangry behavior 😆

I feel you Lea! That's massive change to your daily activity!!

Like you and Sarah I've been trying to do lots of little things to increase my activity throughout the day, like multiple 30 minute walks and taking regular breaks to get up and move around. I also invested in a standing desk converter (sits on top of my desk) so that I spend more time standing and have more freedom of movement and occasionally also use an exercise ball as my desk chair. I've also been trying to be super strict about not eating past 9pm!

In addition to all the little things, I'd recommend finding a fun fitness challenge or healthy eating trend you can throw yourself into! Trying Keto or Whole 30 or doing a 30 or 60 day fitness challenge gives you something specific to focus on. Or your goal could simply be to try a new workout video every other day! 🏋️‍♀️

I work in an office 8-5 and sit on my bum all day except for my power hour where I stand while I work. Covid took away my gym. I changed my eating habits to healthier than the healthy food I was already eating, cut sugar and lattes. My FH and I have begun to take long hour walks or hikes in the nearby parks, we are lucky that we live in a city that has a wide range of parks and state parks where we can do hard hikes over the weekend. It has greatly helped both of us get the stress down, FH has been furloughed for two months, and its helped my ankylosing spondylitis from flaring. I would recommend it greatly if you have the opportunity in your hometown.
