Flaky vendor? Persevere or replace?

mrswinteriscoming, on June 16, 2021 at 8:45 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

My makeup artist is a distant family friend who used to do makeup full time but now does it solely as a side hustle on occasion as she has 2 children under 3. Her work is beautiful but I’m a little bit iffy as to whether or not I replace her as a vendor since she seems less invested/organised as I know she used to be.

I asked her months ago if she wanted me to put down a deposit and she was a bit blasé about it – she was happy for me to do this and would prefer it but it wasn’t a deal breaker for her. I’ve asked her on a few occasions now to issue me an invoice so I can pay a deposit and every single time she tells me she will, she wouldn’t follow through. I’ve probably chased on for this about 3 times.

I understand that she is busy since she has two little ones but I somewhat feel like I can’t depend on her – I’m just a bit uneasy about not actually having been able to confirm the commitment. I’m also about 6 months out from my wedding so I know that if I need to find a replacement, I need to start looking now.

Thoughts – should I persevere or find a new makeup artist? If I replace her, how should I tell her??

Replace, if showing flaky behavior now you don’t want to have to scramble to find someone else closer to your wedding and then not be able to find someone cause they all booked.

I would have a honest conversation with her about it. Perhaps she’s being less professional with you because of your relationship. Tell her that you are a bit concerned because you haven’t had the responsiveness you’d expect and let her know that You want the wedding day to be as stressless as possible. Then tell her you’ve been thinking of getting another MUA

Low and behold I chased her up today and she told me her assistants are all booked out and that she can only do the booking herself if she starts at 6am! Now scrambling to find someone else.

So frustrated because I have literally been chasing this for months, ugh.

I'm sorry that happened, but its for the best that it happened now vs a month to your wedding. I hope you can find someone more reliable who does an amazing job!

Replace. Too much stress on your part and doesn’t seem like she’s so invested that she’d be upset.

Ended up letting her go – when I contacted her last she told me she didn’t have any assistants available that day. She hadn’t booked in any assistant even though she has known for 18 months that we’d need a second MUA on the day (she herself told us this) so that was the final straw and I’m now searching for a new MUA!
