Flashback free foundation and waterproof mascara

Erika, on October 28, 2019 at 3:19 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 19
Hello!! Does anybody have any good recommendations on foundations or powders that don’t cause flashback in photos? I currently use the too faced born this way foundation. But I’ve recently tried out Anastasia Beverly Hills new foundation, Milani 2 in 1, and maybelline fit me matte and poreless. They have all given me flashback regardless if I’m using primer or setting powder. With about 25 days left I’m starting to worry I’m going to look ghostly in all my pictures haha! I have normal to dry skin, mostly clear. I’d love to hear what has worked for you guys! Also on the hunt for a good waterproof mascara.. I cry a lot

Try Smashbox. When I wear it people can't even tell I have it on.

I can't help much with the foundation (I have oily skin), but I love the Too Faced Better Than Sex waterproof version! It comes in a blue bottle instead of the pink one.

I used Revlon Photoready. It's available in drugstores. Some drugstores have a guarantee that lets you return makeup if you don't like it, so it would be risk free to give it a try if you bought from one of those.

I’ve been wanting to try the Laura mercier setting powder! I’ll have to give it a try, since right now I’m using the cover Fx powder and it just looks super dry on me. Thanks for the tips! (:

May I ask what setting powder and primers you are using?

I switch between too face hangover primer and tatcha silk canvas. And for setting powders I’ve tried the coty airspun, cover fx translucent setting powder and tarte shape tape setting powder. And sometimes I use the morphe setting spray!

I use smashbox photo finish primer, NARS sheer glow, ilia or tarte shape tape concealor, and smashbox finishing powder. Loving the NARS. The pic is the only one I have using the described combo, but it was professional.

Those products shouldn’t case any flashback. If you are getting flashback, try adding a light layer of setting powder after using your setting spray. Yes I said after.

Don’t use HD powders for photography, it also causes flashback. HD powder is only for filming.

This article by Huda Beauty suggests avoiding products containing Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide (minerals used to provide SPF in natural and mineral based beauty products) and Silica (commonly used in HD powders, which some people use to "bake" and some people incorrectly use to set makeup). It suggested that chemical SPFs are usually not the culprit.

I'll also note that flashback is primarily a problem when direct flash is used, which means the flash is coming from the same direction as the camera and this generally doesn't result in flattering photos anyway. Most high quality wedding photographers will use bounce flash or off camera flash for more natural looking photos, so flashback in your wedding photos (assuming you hired a quality photographer) shouldn't be as much of an issue as it is with smartphone selfies.
