Florist Quote way too high???

Hannah, on August 15, 2021 at 12:03 PM Posted in Style and Décor 1 22

Hello everyone! I received a quote yesterday from the florist we were hoping to use for our wedding. A family friend is taking care of all our decor for the reception and ceremony minus the flowers for the bridal party. We were quoted $1700 for my bridal bouquet, 1 bridesmaid bouquet, 4 boutonnieres, 3 corsages and 3 small flower crowns for our flower girls. Am I crazy or is this an extremely high price for the basic items that we need? For reference, we live in Eastern KY. I have reviewed many florist's price lists, several in larger KY cities than where we are located, and the cost doesn't add up anywhere near this price. I am also planning a wedding in Scotland and we are only paying our florist there $5000 to essentially cover our venue in florals, so I was very surprised by the proposed cost. I would have expected this if I had been ordering larger arrangements for the ceremony or centerpieces for the wedding but we only need the basics. Anyone else had a similar experience/would be willing to share the cost you paid for these items?

Some of this will depend on what flowers you want - especially in December. Forced flowers are more expensive generally (from what I hear), some flowers are just more expensive to begin with - or some colors of them are, and I understand that there have been some issues in getting flowers (I guess the flower crops have been bad here?). There's no real way to know if that's out of line without knowing what blooms you want. Florists in larger cities may have a better supply line, so that may be why there's a disconnect there. I would see if I could get another quote or two in your area.

That seems insanely high! I was quoted less than that for 1 bride bouquet, 7 BM bouquets, 10 boutonnieres, and 2 corsages. 😮 I live in Pittsburgh and this was a lower end quote, but yours seems unreasonably high. Do you have any special, unique flowers and/or colors that might make it higher?

That does seem high. I'm being charged around $650 to 700 for a similar list of items (so no centerpieces or anything) and I'm in a way more pricey area. But as someone said, it depends a lot on the kinds of flowers and the time of year.

No, we didn’t make any special requests really! I did ask for velvet ribbon on my bouquet to match our tablecloths but that was it. I do want a larger bouquet but still was totally not expecting that price! Asked for typical winter floral colors (cream, blush and burgundy). They totaled over $900 for the flowers with an additional $730 labor charge and that is with us picking everything up, no delivery. They sent a breakdown of flowers they were planning to use and most seemed to be pretty common like eucalyptus, ranunculus, astilbe, common roses, etc.

Thanks for your reply! That’s about the price we were expecting to receive based on what we asked for.

The florist did my daughter's bouquet, 2 bridesmaid bouquets, 8 corsages and 11 boutennaires for $900 in CA.

Astilbe and ranunculus will drive up the cost as they are not seasonal in December (and astilbe tends to be pricey even when in season).

Where in Pittsburgh are you from? What florist did you choose? Wedding isn't until 2022 but have been searching for places people recommended. Smiley smile

My wedding is in the Butler area and we chose Hearts and Floral Flower Designs in Allison Park! I love her work and working with her so far has been a delight. I highly recommend, especially if you love the greenery look ☺️ I'd say the pricing for what we wanted is average for the area ($2.4k-ish for the above mentioned + centerpiece greenery rings and delivery).

The quote I mentioned on this post was from All Events Floral (I think from Monroeville?). His pricing was great, couldn't beat it, but best if you know exactly the vision you want and more traditional bouquets (like round, tight tied ones instead of greenery and loose). Good luck on the search!!

$730 for labor?? For $900 worth of flowers?

Keep looking. We got at least 3 bids before picking a vendor. This quote seems like an outlier

Wow that seems very expensive and the flower versus labor charge seems way out of whack to me. I would get another quote for sure

The only way to really know what is reasonable for your location and scope is to get three comparable quotes from local florists. If all proposals are too high for your budget, then you will need to reduce what you are asking for (by type of flower, size of arrangements, number, etc.).

Thanks, everyone! Got a few more quotes and they ranged anywhere from $475-700 for what we were asking for with the $700 quote being from a well-known, higher end florist in a nearby city so I think the quote we were given by the florist in the post was definitely way out of line. Looks like we will just have to use someone else!

Glad you got some second estimates. The new prices seem much more in line with what I would expect for those floral needs.

Forced flowers are more expensive generally. Why don't you choose some fake flower to decorate? Nowadays, the artificial flower is almost like the real flower, and it can be forever.

Recommend a artificial flower manufacturer from China: Anfamily Flower Dock

It seems extremely high however it depends on the flowers, if they’re in season, and also any shortages due to covid

That seems really high. I got a bridal bouquet, 6 bridesmaid bouquets, 9 boutonnieres, 2 mini boutonnieres and 5 wrist corsages for $700. I went with moonstone roses, hydrangeas and greenery. Maybe try looking into "in season" flowers or going with a wholesale service. Crafting bouquets is also a really good option! I had a friend buy these big rings/wreaths that she attached flowers to and they were BEAUTIFUL.
