Flower-Free Wedding?

Summer, on April 9, 2010 at 2:00 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 33

Okay, so I have a little hangup about cut flowers. They're not environmentally friendly, being drenched in chemical pesticides and fertilizers, and it really frosts my cornflakes that they cost so much when I could make wonderful decorations without them. I would love to just eliminate cut flowers completely. What are your thoughts?

There are plenty of alternatives. I'm not having flowers in any of the centerpieces because of cost. I'm using acorns, and pinecones. Might also use branches and pumpkins. I know of a few girls on here that have had different bouquets-buttons, brooches, wooden flowers, silk flowers.

Sure, why not? If this is how you feel... there are so many other things that you can do without flowers.

I am using potted flowers for my centerpieces. I will give them away to the people who have helped out at the wedding.

You can also do a lot with candles. If you eliminate flowers, think about doing lots more light.

I am not using flowers at the venue at all (our ceremony and reception are in the same place). We are using lots of candles instead to create a romantic vibe. I have ordered flowers for the bouquets and boutannaires. However, the "bouquets" are VERY simple. Each of my girls (I have 4) will carry one long stemmed calla lily. I will be carrying a very small bouquet of 3 calla lilies with fabric wrapping and a broach. I am not a fan of flowers at all so I knew I didn't want them at the venue. I didn't really want them for bouquets of anything either but I could not find an alternative I liked. After I met with my florist on the bouquets and bouts. I was very comfortable and happy with my decision to do it up simple.

Im using silk flowers, gords, pine cones, branches and leaves for all my decorations and Im getting fresh flowers from an organic farmer that sells at the farmers market near me (he is certified organic). Ive thought about even just using flowers out of my own garden. You can really do alot without using flowers at all. My wedding is the first event Ive done in a very long time that Im using any kind of floral. Unless you count the tissue flowers I made for my parents anniversary or the hershey kiss rose buds I made for valentines.

Other than my felt flower and button bouquet, I have no flowers in my wedding. My BM are carrying parasols, and all my centerpieces are either floating candles, or candle lamps. I agree that the price can be really shocking, but there are alternatives out there, it just takes some creativity to find and use them.

Talk with your florist about locally grown and organic or Veriflora certified flowers. These are flowers that are grown in an environmentally and socially conscious way. Flowers grown this way are much more environmentally friendly than candle centerpieces or glass or faux flower based arrangements because real flowers decompose very quickly (within weeks) where as "hard good" centerpieces do not decompose and are not compostable. You could try to find centerpiece ideas using things you will reuse in your own home after the wedding like cute teacups. Or I once did a wedding where each table had their own decorated cake as a centerpiece. Yummy, beautiful, unique and eco-friendly! You could also do paper flowers out of antique book pages or recyclable patterned paper.

I love button bouquets--we're doing cut flower bouquets for the ceremony, but I ordered a button bouquet in our colors to put on the gift table at our engagement party/co-ed shower. If I'd known about them before contracting with the florist, I might have thought about them for the ceremony, too.

It you don't want to deal with flowers try candles. It is also better on cutting cost down as well. Good luck to you.

We are not doing flowers of any kind. My BMs are carrying lanterns, I'm carrying a feather bouquet, centerpieces are curly willow branches. You can absolutely do a wedding with no flowers. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I've seen some butterfly bouquets that were really pretty, but I can't find pictures of the ones I mean at the moment. On Martha Stewart's wedding website, there are instructions to make one yourself, though.

Denise, all of the pictures you posted are GORGEOUS! Yes, definitely don't do flowers if you don't like flowers. There really are no rules anymore with weddings on what you "have to" do. It's all you Smiley smile
