Foam Puzzle Mat Dance Floor?

Megan, on June 28, 2017 at 6:15 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 22

*UPDATE* Thanks for the advice. I will be going with a wood dance floor.

We are getting married on our parent's property. There is a flat grassy area where we want to put the dance floor. Question is, do you think those foam puzzle mats would make a good dance floor? It's about $150 cheaper than renting a wooden dance floor and has a wood-grain texture to look like a real wood floor. I will already be instructing our guests to wear flats (no heels) due to all the grass. Would the foam mat be hard to dance on? Would it be uneven on the grass? Would a wood floor be uneven on the grass? Has anyone had any experience with either?

The unevenness of the ground would cause the puzzle matt to undo when people step on it. It could also be slippery because of the foam. I would spend the extra money to get a wooden dance floor!

That sounds like a tripping hazard. Foam is not to dance on.

I know what floor you're talking about and I feel like it'd be hard to dance on, especially with it laying on top of grass (another soft surface)

Honestly, I wouldn't risk the pressure & uneven ground cause them to come apart/lift up & causing someone to fall. I'd gladly pay the extra $150 for a wooden dance floor.

I don't think so. Get a dance floor. It will be installed by your tent company who will even it out.

Um...you are having a tent, right?

I feel like FMS is right about the foam puzzle pieces coming apart each time someone steps on it if it were lying on top of grass.

What if it gets wet? That stuff is treacherous if it gets wet. If a drink gets spilled or the grass underneath is damp, it could become a liability.

I would think that a dance floor wouldn't be something you skimped on. The puzzles seem like a huge tripping hazard.

Definitely no foam... sounds like a liability. Speak to a rental company about putting down a proper floor on grass... I'm sure they can help you find something that will fit your needs.

Thank you all for your super quick responses. I'll go with the wood floor.

For those who asked: We have tents as a backup for bad weather, but otherwise will not be having a tent.

Don't do that. It's too light it would shift around and separate

Foam will look very tacky first of all. I also do not think it will be good for dancing, it will break apart.

I'm a little nervous for you, I wouldn't want someone falling or tripping. I know none of our grandparents would even try. I say pay the extra bucks and have it be right

No tent at all?? What if people want to get away from the sun? What about old people or kids?

This thread wasn't about tents, but to answer your question, the wedding is behind a hill and will be shaded almost the entire time. We will also have a few gazebos.

I have also already taken everyone's advice and decided against the foam. It was just an idea that came to mind that I thought was good at the time. I now see all of the issues it could cause. I'll get a wood dance floor. Thanks again for the advice.

Yes they would be uneven. Yes they would split apart and cause people to trip. Yes someone will wear heels anyways. These are fine on a cement pad/solid floor. They are not good at all on anything else

We have tents for backups, but will not be using them if the weather is nice.

How are you going to tell people to not wear heels?
