We are doing the cooking ourselves and I was wondering if any of my fellow wedding wire peeps can give me some ideas of dishes that can be made in big quality and help keep food cost down some? So far we have come up with a few pasta dishes and maybe a salad. What are some ideas that you guys and gals have did or are doing. Food is probably out biggest expense.

@Jenna yes I'm sure people are going to complain to the sister of the bride.

Chafing dishes don't keep an entire chicken at food safe temp, btw. Point of fact. A licensed caterer carries INSURANCE. They also have all the equipment needed to truly keep hot food hot and cold food cold. If you don't do that, then the risk of food borne illness really goes up.

"If you want to go in debt and spend $50+(I've seen some posts where people are spending $200+ PER PERSON) per person for them to eat mass produced food, by all means, go ahead. "

So feeding 100 people doesn't qualify as being "mass produced"?? Are you cooking for your guests one at a time?

I am paying $199 pp, but but not just for food. Also for the convenience and service and not having to worry about myself or my guests lifting a finger.

Can't believe this stupid thread is still first on my list.

ETA: I am not going into debt for anything. I have budgeted and saved responsibly to afford my wedding and also my home and also to live comfortably. If going into debt is a fear, you should not be having a wedding.

I had catered "mass produced wedding food" and 2 months later people still rave about my food. And guess what?! My loved ones didn't have to lift a finger and neither did I.

    Totally worth it.

Also Penny will have retired caterers helping her. Everyone that will be helping has had experience with this stuff before.

I'm so thankful I won't be having shitty, bland, self-catered food at my wedding. I feel sorry for all the guests who traveled, spent money, and got dressed up only to be served mediocre food.

    I get where u r coming from.

I would suggest try to go with cheap catering like someone mentioned BBQ.

Cheaper than that. Really is pasta. Make chicken pasta. Ground beef. And maybe a seafood pasta. For variety. I think with two pastas and a big salad. Some bread rolls, u r good. But from reading stories, there is a shit ton of stress during the week of. And that's for many brides who have food taken care of.

Try to find a cheap caterer. A local restaurant. Bring them an offer.

Remember buying steak/chicken for 100 plus extra for buffet. Will be pricey too.

Find a cheap caterer. Good luck Smiley smile

@FMR2018 LOL you obviously have no idea how nasty any bathroom can get with multiple people using it- ours just so happen to come with water fueled hand washing stations so people can WASH their hands after using the bathroom as people should be and would be doing after any bathroom trip.

@sam s. Agreed, I've worked in a restaurant and it's the most disgusting place I've ever worked. The amount of times I've watched an employee leave a bathroom without washing their hands, dropping FOOD on the FLOOR and picking it up like it didn't happen, or for my dad when they made him food where he requested one thing be emitted due to an allergy and when it came to him it wasn't and he told them that and they told him they would entirely remake it and when it came back (5 minutes later) it still had remnants of what they took off. Restaurants are literally disgusting, and having a mobile restaurant only adds to the contamination. All my food will be made on site and travel from oven to table covered.

@Laura K. We have a pretty honest family, you'd be surprised what they'd drop on people. My fiancés family is no different, if something is nasty, they speak up.

@Jacks A bunch of strangers handling your food behind the scenes also causes food borne illness to go up, as Sam mentioned, catering and restaurant staff are underpaid and over worked- it's not uncommon for them to get sloppy- and besides, it's not their family AND they have insurance so why do they care if something goes wrong?

@Future Mrs. G - if we are cooking for our guests one at a time would it affect how you feel? Probably not.

I catered mine because I was too cheap, stupid and stubborn to hire another caterer.

I would never do it again.

@mermaid not only am I offering free accommodations for all guests who are traveling any distance, but we also don't have a dress code so if they want to come in jeans they're more then welcome! We've already had trial runs for food, and it's far from shitty or bland haha

If you are pursuing this route I would suggest pork BBQ, meatballs, pasta salad, potato salad. These are just some quick foods that come to mind for me. Slow cooker things may be ideal... perhaps BBQ or sloppy joe.

@jenna no it wouldn't affect me at all because I don't give a flying fuck what you do at your wedding. But if you're going to make a statement about food being mass produced, know exactly what you're talking about. Because when you're serving people in large quantities .. it's all mass produced.

    On that note adios!
