Food poisoning the week of the wedding

Rachel, on October 12, 2021 at 7:08 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 9
Woke up this morning with food poisoning after going to one of our usual restaurant for my fiancés step-father’s birthday. I’ve been feeling terrible all day (vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, cramps and weakness). I’ve been trying to drink water and have tried Gatorade but keep throwing up both immediately. My wedding is in 4 days, and there’s still a lot to be done! Does anyone have any tips or a similar story to make me feel better lol? I know I’ll be over it by Saturday, but I’m still worried about just feeling weak and icky still. Let me know if y’all have any recommendations or tips that work for you!

Go to your doctor or urgent care and get a shot of Zofran. That will make your nausea go away. Try very slowly sipping a half Gatorade half water cocktail in the meantime but go get that shot! It’ll save you in a few hours.

If you truly think its food poisoning, you should definitely see a doctor. If its caused by E. Coli or Listeria it can be a serious illness, it can even cause death. Plus, both of those have to be reported to the Board of Health. Since it hit you so fast, its likely a Norovirus which should clear up quicker than the other types.

Most stomach bugs clear up in 24 hours, so see how you feel then. Gatorade is a good idea. On the bright side, now you probably won't feel bloated on the big day.

You may even need a bag of IV fluids

Get to doctor/urgent care, try pedialyte, enlist help from any family/friends so you can rest.

Food poisoning rarely lasts long. Usually it resolves within 24-48 hours, so you should be fine before your wedding.

If you don't feel significantly better tomorrow, it would be worth calling your doc, just in case it is a more serious infection, but otherwise I would stick to bland foods for now, stay hydrated, and try to get some rest.

Zofran is really good to stop nausea, but if this is food poisoning, it's best not to interfere with the body's efforts to expel the source of the poisoning (this is also why one should not take Immodium for diarrhea from food poisoning/infections).

I agree with everyone's advice to go to an urgent care clinic - they can decide if they need to send you to a hospital for IV fluids and help determine the best course of treatment. I would also recommend trying Pedialyte over Gatorade. You might also try ginger ale (a traditional nausea remedy).
