Food tasting Prior to wedding?

Makeba, on July 27, 2021 at 8:46 PM Posted in Planning 0 28
I reached out to our venue today and asked if we could do a food tasting? Their response was not until next year…Has anyone else tasted the food at your venue?

That’s a huge red flag. A tasting needs to occur before you hire the caterer. You do one tasting per catering company to find out who you like best. Otherwise you will be locked in to something that you may not even like and it’s too late to back out at that point.

Our venue normally allowed a tasting within 3 months prior to the wedding.

We hired the venue and then did a food tasting to pick our menu.

Our venue had their food tasting about three months out from our wedding date.

Our venue did the food tasting in June for our December wedding. The tasting was to finalize our menu. We have to use their in house catering.

It might be because they are changing their menu?

Another vote here for the tasting being about 3 months out from the day. Often places have seasonal menus, and so it's sensible to choose your food items a bit closer to the day.

We're quite lucky, in one way - our venue is a restaurant, so we've been able to eat there multiple times and never had a poor meal. On the downside, they cancelled tastings ahead of our wedding due to covid, although we can have a free 3-course meal with wine there any time up to a year after our wedding date instead.

Our original wedding venue was all inclusive and we were told we would have our tasting 3 months prior to the wedding like others above have noted.

Honestly that is normal for all inclusive venues that doesn't allow outside catering. You typically don't do the tasting until about 3 months before the wedding.

Same as many of the previous posters. I hired the venue and did the tasting maybe one year after that. My venue usually does the menu tasting 3 to 6 months before the wedding since they serve seasonal options.

All the venues we looked at had in house catering and tasting was done a few times a year, a large group, after the venue was booked.

We went with a catering company that was through a restaurant and it was the same way, but since it's a restaurant we love and have never had an issue with the food even being iffy, we're not concerned. The point of the tasting for us (since I know this isn't the same for every company) is for the chef to make exactly what we're expecting to be served and we can decide from there if that's what we actually want to go with or if they need to change taste, ingredients, flavors, etc. to our liking.

We have a menu tasting next month for our December wedding. I'd be concerned about not doing a tasting before finalizing a menu...

Our wedding was July 2020, not long after quarantine was lifted. The hotel was too busy to offer tasting, and our baker couldn't permit a tasting either. I had already searched reviews before booking so I was confident that the food and cake would be good. And it was. Very good! My husband and I cut the cake, were both surprised at how good it was. We're in a new normal. You have to trust your instincts. One thing I did when selecting the menu was be absolutely frank with the catering director to help me select the right foods. They know the menu and what's good and what guests prefer and what they don't and can help you navigate your selections.

If you are unable to do a tasting is it possible just to order a few menu items to get an understanding of the quality of food. I also review the REVIEW - they are usually spot on. Just remember to also post your review so we know what to expectSmiley smile
